A devastated mum has warned youngsters of the dangers of swimming in open water after her 13-year-old son drowned in a quarry lake.

Dylan Ramsay, 13, went for a swim in the lake at Whittle Hill Quarry in Lancashire on Sunday as temperatures soared into the mid-20s. The youngster then got into trouble in the water and died at the scene.

His heartbroken parents Rebecca and John Ramsay made a statement at the quarry, saying:

"It doesn't matter how fit you are – the water is stronger. My boy was a good swimmer but it took him away.

"We had told him not to come up here because it is dangerous but Dylan was a thrill-seeker."

"I have spoken out to stop this happening again. Our lives will never be the same."

Police are investigating.
