Day three of Paris haute couture week started with the Chanel show and as always, it was a truly fabulous affair.
Creative director Karl Lagerfeld sent his model fleet down the runway in a beautiful Autumn/Winter 2014 collection that included white button-down, gold embellished gowns teamed with cross-body bags and sequinned hats, embroidered dresses worn over trousers and shorts worn under tweed skirts.
As ever, the intricate detail was stunning and there was a regal Grecian regal theme that was accentuated by the gold brocades and spiky updos. The dress with a floor-length caped jacket and train? Wow.
While Lagerfeld gave a nod to the gold leaf headpieces worn by goddesses, the ribboned sandals were low key in comparison.Then again, Kaiser Karl knows modern women are all about a comfy flat shoe, even if they are lucky enough to be wearing couture.
Of course, the collection included signature Chanel pieces - tweed tailoring (jackets, skirts and shorts), traditional tartans, fabulous furs and fringing but there was a contemporary aesthetic here too. Perhaps Lagerfeld was hoping to grab the attention of a more youthful audience?
The gauzy fabrics, the layers, the androgynous dress and trouser combos, the metallic colour palette and the off-the-shoulder silhouettes looked totally wearable. If only they were a little more affordable...
