Ricky Gervais has claimed British culture stifles ambition in children, and makes them believe they can't achieve their goals.
Gervais - who created The Office and Extras - claimed he never wanted to be famous, and as a working-class youngster, thought it was better "to never try than risk failing".
Gervais - who has a long term partner but is unmarried and does not have children - praised the American way of instilling in kids that they CAN achieve anything they want to, saying:
"Americans believe they can be president. British kids are told, 'Don't be stupid. It won't happen for you'".
Gervais also slammed the 'fame hungry' nature of society - as reflected in his BBC2 comedy Life's Too Short which portrays the 'fame-hungry monsters who'll do anything to be on telly'.
