As fussy eating goes, this is a new one on us. For Charlotte Snow, 18, refuses to eat anything apart from chicken escalopes.

The teenager, from north London, choked on spaghetti when she was a toddler – and now refuses to eat anything other than the breaded chicken breasts.

She said: "I've been scared to try other foods since I can remember.

"Just the thought of putting other foods in my mouth and then not liking the taste makes me feel anxious. I don't know what I would do if I ate something I wasn't keen on."

Her parents have tried everything to persuade her to have a well-balanced diet – including seeking medical help – but nothing has worked.

The only other foods Charlotte has even been persuaded to try are chips, crisps, bread and cereal, but even these must be specific brands.

Her mum Carla, 42, thinks she was scarred by the spaghetti incident when she was three years old.

Carla said: "She nearly choked on it and since then she's been very fussy."

Despite her poor high-fat regime, the north London student is a slender size ten and has no health problems.

But she added: "I would love to be able to eat more foods one day. It would be great to enjoy dinner with my friends and socialise more."

A spokesperson for Triumph Over Phobia, the phobia charity said: "Charlotte needs to have a course of exposure therapy to help her overcome her fear of food.

"She will only recover if she faces her fear and she can do this by taking little steps each day."
