A three-year-old girl has died after apparently shooting herself with her dad's handgun at a holiday campsite.

The toddler's mother told emergency services that her daughter had shot herself at the Grant Village campsite on the shores of Yellowstone Lake in in America's Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.

Paramedics were unable to resuscitate the child. The youngster's death comes three years after law-makers lifted a decades-old ban forbidding the possession of guns by visitors to most national parks.

It is the first fatal shooting in Yellowstone since 1978, and the first gun death of a child in a national park since 1938.

Park spokesman Al Nash said the incident was 'the kind of thing that isn't supposed to happen here'. Authorities have not yet said whether they believe the shooting was accidental or deliberate.
