Unexpected parenting challenge number 5,439 emerged last week when my 6 year old son presented me with his latest amazing loom band creation. He was really very proud of it. He had used You Tube to help him create it he said. "Wow," I said utterly lost for words and struggling to contain my mirth. "What is it?"

As he explained I looked up his tablet history. If someone was helping kids make loom band penises then I needed to get it taken down. But no (and maybe even more worryingly) this was mainly an independent endeavour.

However as he put it over his hand and then hooked the red loop over his finger I realised that this was clearly the best superhero loom band bracelet ever made. The ladder loom band that he had carefully researched on You Tube ran up the outside of his hand, the red loop went over his finger and the green elements wrapped around his wrist. All completely obvious when you see it......

But this experience gave me cause to reflect. If your child accidentally makes a penis when crafting here are some tips for how to handle it:

  • Do not tell them - ever (or until they are old enough to read your blog - arrrggghhh)
  • Praise them for their wonderful creativity. Remember they know not what they have done.
  • Do not laugh really, really hard until tears and snot come out because they will know that there is something not quite right about their creation.
  • Once they have finished playing with their creation put it somewhere safe. This is 21st birthday gold.
