The dad from the viral pregnancy announcement who had been trying for a baby for 17 years has revealed his wife is in "critical care" after their son was delivered at 24 weeks.

Dana Griffin-Graves' husband Arkel Graves, whose reaction to finding out his wife was pregnant melted the hearts of many, updated the couple's Facebook page on 20 October to deliver the news and ask for prayers.

The couple have already experienced one stillbirth at six months and four miscarriages since they began trying for a baby.

Arkel wrote: "Today, our baby will have to be delivered, at 24 weeks and one day.

"As Dana is in critical care, her body has endured all it can take. Please keep us in your prayers today and always.

"We apologise that we are unable to answer every call, text and message, but please know that we appreciate you. #DeliveryDay #KeepPraying."

Arkel uploaded another photo on the couple's Facebook to announce Dana had given birth to a boy named Kaleb Arkel Graves.

The updates were met with thousands of well-wishers and comments praying for their son.

One person wrote: "I will keep you all in my prayers. Being a mother of two former micro preemies and suffered from severe pre-e eclampsia in both pregnancies, there is hope. Never underestimate the power of love, life, and faith."

The original pregnancy announcement, where Dana put a bun in the oven with the scan photo on top, has been viewed nearly 10 million times on YouTube.

Dana said she and her husband Arkell Graves started trying for a baby after their wedding in 1998.

Speaking to BuzzFeed News, Griffin-Graves said: "We had everything planned, but it just didn’t work out, so we kind of gave up."

However, she recently discovered she was five months pregnant and was due in February 2016.

As soon as her pregnancy was confirmed, she started to plan the best way to tell her husband.

"There's some stuff in the oven too," she told her husband in the video while he prepped dinner.
