Apparently women's social lives are boosted by having a baby.

Researchers found mums gain nine new friends after they give birth, increasing their social circle from 13 to 22.

The study claims that friendships are formed between women as they share baby-care tips and bond over sleepless nights and childcare.

The survey revealed that more than half the women polled felt it was surprisingly easy to make friends after giving birth, and 70 per cent said this was because they had 'so much in common' with the other mums.

Nearly half of the women said they made their new friends at mother and toddler groups, while a fifth said they still kept in touch with the mums they met at their antenatal classes.

The most popular topic of conversation between the new chums was their labour experience, and a whopping 73 per cent said they would happily tell new friends their warts and all birth stories.

A large amount also said they felt it was easier to talk about intimate and personal stuff with women they had just met, including details of their post-birth love life.

And about a third of the 2,000 women surveyed said their motivation for meeting new friends was the fear of boring their old ones with baby talk!

A spokeswoman for the company behind the survey, Nature's Purest, said that there was a misconception in society that starting a family will mean you are stuck indoors.

"Our research shows the opposite. Becoming a mum can do wonders for your social life as there are many groups and activities to become involved with," she said. "Having a baby is a life-changing experience, especially if you are a first-time mum, so it's important to have friends in a similar position."
