The brother of X Factor winner Sam Bailey has revealed how she battled to stop him becoming an alcoholic following the death of their dad – who had died from drink-related cancer.

After the death of his father, Danny, 39, started drinking heavily, downing a bottle and a half of vodka a day.

But when former prison officer Sam found out, she was determined to make sure Danny didn't go the same way.

Danny told The Mirror: "I was drinking myself to death – but it was Sam who saved me.

"She was always there for me and made me see there was more to life than booze.

"It wasn't easy, but she did everything she could to make me change my ways.

"Our dad's death tore us apart. I don't think she could take watching me go down the same route. She would do anything for the people she loves.

"She saved me with the same determination that has helped her do so well on the show. She's been a fighter all her life. She would hold my hand through detoxes and make sure there wasn't a drink in sight."

Now Danny has been off the booze for 16 months under 36-year-old Sam's watchful eye – and he has vowed to travel the world as her bodyguard when she goes on tour after her monumental success to repay the faith she showed in him.

He said: "I'd really like to do that for her."
