'Posh' Chicken restaurants are one of the new 'food trends' at the moment. Both Wishbone and Chicken Shop have been on the scene for a while but a new chicken restaurant has joined the club - Clockjack Oven.
Based near Piccadilly Circus just on the outskirts of Soho, Clockjack Oven is a small restaurant that features a mixture of tables and high tables with stools with an open plan kitchen and an impressive rotisserie oven in the middle. The decor is light and airy and had quite a cosmopolitan feel when we visited on a busy lunchtime.
We were seated on one of the high tables and ordered a Fresh Summertime Lemonade and Diet Coke (both £2.25) while we were given the small but ample menu to select our lunch choices. There were rotisserie chicken offerings of both chicken salad and chicken sandwiches but we both decided to order the simple Rotisserie Roasted Chicken and chose 3 pieces each with Gravy and Chilli Sauce (£6.95). We also chose some Double Cooked Chips (£3.25) and a House Salad (£3.95).
The chicken, free range and prepared in a secret marinade, came with crispy skin and the meat was tasty and juicy. Three pieces were almost enough but I think four pieces (£8.95) would have been just perfect. The gravy was thick and rich and worked perfectly with the chicken - and chips (I am a Northener!).
The chips were crispy and fluffy and the salad included slices of apple and small stuffing bites which were an unusual and clever addition and complimented the chicken.
We were only having a light lunch so didn't order dessert but the chicken and chips were ample for a midweek lunch and we really enjoyed dining at Clockjack Oven.
The chicken is cooked to perfection and is super tasty - what more do you want from a 'chicken' restaurant? We will be back.
