Love is a powerful human emotion; it is hypnotic, captivating and can provide happiness on a grand scale. The ability, for an individual, to walk into your life and literally bring warmth to your heart is an awesome moment; for love is a powerful stimulate. Love can be expressed in a variety of ways, but the most ultimate is dedicating your life to another individual. The union of commitment is a day, in which, two separate individuals become one; the principle of marriage. Alas, though, the state discriminates in the favour of heterosexual individuals; those of the same gender are regulated, and their love for each other is not treated as morally equal.
Whether you believe homosexuality is morally right or not, is besides the point; it is about fairness and about preventing state morality. The government does not-and should not-have arbitrary authority to define what is acceptable. It must certainly should not regulate something as universal as love; a human cannot prevent who their heart falls for. A journey of romance can be painful experience, or one of great happiness, but either way the state should not lay out a predetermined route.
In a ever growing secular society, marriage does not represent a religious ceremony or act - the definition has universal meaning and varieties; it is not Christian per say, or belonging to a single religious sect. Religion cannot justify the barbaric act of discriminating an individual, on a doctrine, that has little relevance in modern, cosmopolitan and free society. A modern society is inclusive, open and aspires to share the same rights and liberties; a god, who wishes obedience and loyalty, is incompatible with humanity. The love between two people is more real and genuine than a first century religion. And the 'God argument' has no justifiable excuse to deny happiness to two individuals of the same sex.
Whatever you decide to do in your personal life, provided it does not infringe on the liberty of others, does not require sanctioning from the state; marrying a fellow human does not violate the liberty of others, or society as a whole. The expression of sexuality is no longer a crime, or a taboo subject within society, and it is openly discussed. Being gay does not create controversy because, quite frankly, majority of the population really do not care. And, rightly, we recognise homosexuality as an expression of love, not sex.
The love of two individuals is a private matter, that a couple are entitled to celebrate. It does not fall under the remit of the state and all discriminative laws, against their love and happiness, should be repealed. And that is why the government is right in desiring equal marriage.
