The singer also sings about the ‘SNL’ comedian in the opening lines of the track, which is taken from her forthcoming album of the same name.
Ariana claims to be “thankful” for Pete, as she sings: “Thought I’d end up with Sean / But he wasn’t a match / Wrote some songs about Ricky / Now I listen and laugh / Even almost got married / And for Pete, I’m so thankful / Wish I could say ‘thank you’ to Malcolm / ’Cause he was an angel.
“One taught me love / One taught me patience / And one taught me pain / Now I’m so amazing / I’ve loved and I’ve lost / But that’s not what I see / So look what I got / Look what you taught me,” she continues. “Thank you, next / Thank you, next / Thank you, next / I’m so f—in’ grateful for my ex.”
The new song comes two weeks after Ariana and Pete confirmed they had called off their four-month engagement, and while she is also still promoting her previous record ‘Breathin’.
Fans will also be questioning whether Ariana’s decision to announce a new album so soon after ‘Sweetner’, which was only released in August, was brought forward because of her break-up from Pete.
After ‘thank u, next’ debuted, Pete addressed their split on ‘Saturday Night Live’.
“I know some of you are curious about the break-up,” he said. “But the truth is, it’s nobody’s business and sometimes things just don’t work out. And that’s okay. She’s a wonderful, strong person and I genuinely wish her all the happiness in the world.”
The pair called time on their relationship shortly after the death of Ariana’s previous fiance, Mac Miller, who died in September at the age of 26.
Ariana and Mac began dating in August 2016, splitting in May this year, before Ariana embarked on a relationship with Pete.
