You can now fly to the picturesque Lake District thanks to the re-opening of Carlisle Lake District Airport – but only from three spots in the UK and Ireland.
If you’re based in the south east of England, you’ll be able to catch a flight from Southend Airport from today. Belfast City Airport is offering flights in Northern Ireland and Dublin Airport is offering flights from the Republic of Ireland.
Today’s takeoff will mark the first commercial passenger flight to leave Carlisle Airport in more than 25 years. The new routes, starting from just £39.99, will cut travel time for hikers and avid explorers, some of whom would have previously faced long car rides in their quest for a slice of nature.
There is some level of irony in travelling to an area of unspoilt natural wonder via a carbon footprint-increasing aeroplane. But we’re telling ourselves the short flight is still better than a long-haul abroad.
Something to keep in mind, however, is that a car will come in handy once you get to the Lakes. But, if you’re happy to navigate local bus routes and coaches from Carlisle to the surrounding areas, it’s not essential and can actually encourage you to explore more by foot.
If the hills are calling you, flights can be booked via Scottish airline Loganair. With connections from Southend, Belfast and Dublin to the USA and Europe, the Lakes may get some new fans from further afield, too.
