Cheat Episode 1 Review: The 9 Burning Questions ITV's New Drama Has Left Us With

The new psychological thriller is a real game of cat and mouse.

Telly writers Harry and Jack Williams are taking over our screens once again.

After penning one of 2018′s biggest breakthrough dramas, Liar, and thrilling us all on Sunday nights with the current series of Baptiste, their latest psychological thriller, Cheat, debuted on ITV on Monday.

ITV

The series, which is being aired over four consecutive nights, tells the story of university lecturer Leah Dale who suspects one of her students, Rose, has cheated on her dissertation.

However, what starts out as a seemingly victimless crime, soon descends into a lethal game of cat and mouse.

Here’s the questions we’re asking after episode one...

What are all the drugs in Leah’s bathroom cabinet for?

First off, we saw Leah make a conscious decision not to take the tablets, before later deciding to start taking them again, which drew comment from Adam. But what exactly were they for? Are they to do with their problems in trying to conceive, or do they indicate she has another health concern?

Has Leah cheated on her fiancé?

We saw the lecturer having a sexual fantasy about a colleague in the university toilets, but has she ever acted on her urges before and done the dirty on Adam?

While she might have made out to her friend she is all about honesty and integrity, could she be overcompensating for some of her own misgivings?

How does Rose have so many saved pictures of Leah?

That’s some seriously impressive Facebook stalking.

Had Leah’s dad taught Rose before?

When Leah mentioned Rose to her parents and asked her dad if he had taught her before he retired the previous year, his response that “all the students blurred into one” didn’t exactly sound convincing.

It was later confirmed that he had indeed taught Rose, as she made a comment to Adam during her visit to the house. Will this prove to be significant?

Who is Ben?

The man that Rose called to her room to ask for Leah’s address obviously works for the university, but in what capacity, and how does Rose know him?

As well as Leah’s address, a later scene revealed that Rose had asked him for another favour, but we’re yet to discover what that was...

ITV

What did Rose take with her while Adam was out of the room?

After paying a visit to Leah and Adam’s house, Rose left abruptly after Adam nipped out of the room, sneaking something out with her as she went. Was it their cat, Betsy, or something else?

Was Rose really responsible for Betsy the cat’s death?

Had Rose set it up to make it look like an accident (explaining why the cat wasn’t found wearing her collar), or was it just a red herring used to make us suspicious of Rose?

Did Rose cheat in her dissertation?

We think the answer is probably yes, but what if Leah has got this all wrong.

It’d certainly prove to be a game-changer...

ITV

Who killed Adam?

Speaking of game-changers, a flash-forward at the end of the episode revealed Adam had been murdered, with one of the women apparently responsible for his death. We saw Leah and Rose in a jail set-up, but it was unclear who was the prisoner, as clever dialogue disguised who was behind bars and who was visiting.

However, the police were also seen doubting that they had the right woman – just who will go down for Adam’s murder?

Cheat continues on Tuesday at 9pm on ITV.
