Couple's Disney-Themed Engagement Shoot Has A Powerful Message Behind It

'There isn’t a fairy tale with two princesses and we believe that needs to change.'

A couple’s fairytale engagement photoshoot has captured hearts across the globe.

Yalonda and Kayla Solseng took part in the magical shoot back in June. Yalonda is pictured wearing a blue Cinderella gown, while Kayla is dressed as Belle from ‘Beauty and the Beast’.

The pair said they hoped the photos would inspire greater representation of the LGBTQ+ community in children’s media.

“We wanted to inspire others to write their own fairy tales. There isn’t a fairy tale with two princesses and we believe that needs to change,” they told Mashable.

Yalonda and Kayla started dating two-and-a-half years ago and bonded over the US TV show ‘Once Upon A Time’, where fairytales and modern life collide.

“That show rewrites fairytales and this was our modern-day fairytale,” Kayla told The Huffington Post.

The couple, who married on 3 September, said that despite gay marriage now being legal in the US, representation of gay couples is very limited in children’s movies and stories.

“The lack of connection that we had due to having no role models from the lesbian community made it hard as we grew up to identify with that community,” Yalonda told Mashable.

“I want our photos to be shown to kids and families as a way of saying it’s okay to be who you are. It’s okay to be with the person you love.”

They are now looking to write children’s books representing the LGBTQ+ community. They have set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds to pay for an illustrator and begin promoting their stories.

It truly looks like they’ve found their happily ever after - and we couldn’t be happier for them.
