Florijana Ismaili: Body Of Switzerland Footballer Recovered After Swimming Accident

She was last seen diving into Lake Como.

The body of Switzerland national team player Florijana Ismaili has been recovered after she went missing in a swimming accident in Italy.

The 24-year-old was last seen diving into the water at Lake Como in northern Italy on Saturday afternoon, but according to her companion, did not surface. Her remains were found on Tuesday.

“The Swiss Football Federation (SFV) has the painful task of informing about the death of its national player Florijana Ismaili. We are all upset, deeply affected and very, very sad,” said an SFV statement.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement that it was an “extremely sad moment for all the football community, particularly at a time when we gather at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.”

Switzerland and Liverpool forward Xherdan Shaqiri was among those to send condolences.

“I am deeply shocked by the death of Florijana Ismaili,” he said on Twitter. “My family and I would like to express our condolences to the Ismaili family and the near ones.”

Ismaili had been on the Switzerland national team since 2014 and had earned 33 caps. She was on the country 2015 World Cup team.

Switzerland didn’t qualify for the current World Cup being played in France.
