I’m A Celebrity fans felt producers were a little too harsh with their latest Bushtucker Trial, as the contestants were given their first live challenge of the series.

On Sunday night, I’m A Celebrity went live with a set of tasks themed around Love Island, which included drinking blended cockroaches and pigs’ penises in the “croc tub”, passing testicles between them using only their mouths and retrieving stars from the bottom of disgusting pies (in what Ant and Dec clarified was a reference to being “pied off”).

The last of these challenges saw Roman Kemp and James Haskell lying on a bed of snakes, while trying to unscrew stars from boxes filled with various critters.

However, with a limited time to complete the trial, James quickly ran into trouble when he discovered that a giant crab was in the way of the star in question, which he was unable to budge.

When James finally managed to unscrew the star, Roman then ran into the same problem at his side of the day-bed, meaning they ultimately failed to win any meals for their campmates during their allotted time.

When Ant and Dec questioned why they’d ran into so much bother, a slightly miffed James pointed out: “What was it? The very fact there was a giant crab in the way, that you wanted me to carefully caress in a different direction while I tried to unscrew a star in his face.”

But while Dec poked fun at James’ “prickly” mood, many viewers agreed with the rugby star, suggesting the trial was “unfair”, “impossible” and even a “fix”...

However, Ant and Dec have already hit back at their critics, pointing out that “stand-ins” managed to complete the trial during a rehearsal...

A spokesperson for I'm A Celebrity had no comment when contacted by HuffPost UK.

The celebrities had been competing to win a roast dinner for as many of them as possible, with only three not succeeding.

Because they agreed on who would be a priority beforehand, former footballer Ian Wright will have to go without, despite downing a pint of blended pigs penis during a trial of his own.

I’m A Celebrity airs every night on ITV.
