In a statement his bandmates described Keith as “a true pioneer, innovator and legend”.

The statement reads: “It is with deepest shock and sadness that we can confirm the death of our brother and best friend Keith Flint.

“A true pioneer, innovator and legend. He will be forever missed.

“We thank you for respecting the privacy of all concerned at this time.”

Radio 2 Drive Time host Jo Whiley was one of the first to pay tribute to the musician on Twitter, describing him as “an absolute sweetheart”.

Keith was best known for his punk image and providing the vocals on The Prodigy’s best known singles, Firestarter and Breathe, which both went to number one in the UK chart.
