Love Island's Olivia Attwood Says Abortion Aged 20 Was 'One Of The Few Sensible Decisions In My Life'

The reality TV star spoke out following the introduction of strict new laws in a series of US states.

In the wake of the introduction of strict abortion laws in some US states, Olivia Attwood has discussed her experience of having one.

The Love Island star, who turned 28 earlier this month, told her Instagram followers that she had the abortion when she was 20.

Posting on her Story, she shared a graph about the reason why women have abortions as “nobody’s business”, writing alongside it: “I can’t believe the stuff I have read going on in the States.

Having an abortion when I was 20 is one of the few sensible decisions I have made in this life, and I can’t imagine how terrifying it would be to not have had that option.”

Amid furious opposition from women’s rights advocates, Alabama’s mostly male Senate voted in favour of a bill which virtually outlaws abortion, even in the event of rape and incest. The only exception will be when a woman’s health is at serious risk.

The Alabama bill follows a Georgia law signed last week that bans abortion as soon as a doctor can detect a fetal heartbeat, which is usually around six weeks into a pregnancy.

Olivia isn’t the only star to open up about her own experiences following the law changes and Jameela Jamil also spoke publicly about her decision to have an abortion.

Other celebs have also condemned the laws, with Lady Gaga labelling them a “travesty”.

She wrote on Twitter: “It is an outrage to ban abortion in Alabama, period, and all the more heinous that it excludes those who have been raped or are experiencing incest, non-consensual or not.

“So there’s a higher penalty for doctors who perform these operations than for most rapists? This is a travesty, and I pray for all these women and young girls who suffer at the hands of this system.”

Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon also tweeted her dismay, while also condemning similar laws in other states.

She wrote: “I’m beyond upset about the passing of new abortion bans in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Georgia, and Ohio. This is Unconstitutional and Abhorrent. We can not tolerate this attack on women’s fundamental rights.”
