'Marcella' Ending Explained As Episode 8 Finale Causes Twitter Meltdown

Fans were on the edge of their seats during the final episode of ITV's crime-noir.

'Marcella' fans were left on the edge of their seats on Tuesday (17 May) night, as ITV's crime-noir drama reached its gripping conclusion.

The identity of the serial killer was finally uncovered, as DS Marcella Backland (Anna Friel) finally cracked the case during the tense finale.

The shock scenes saw Henry Gibson revealed as the culprit, after he took best friend Matthew Neil hostage in his wine cellar, in an attempt to frame him for his crimes.

After Marcella arrived at Henry's house to find he had also stabbed her husband Jason, he admitted to the killings.

But in a shock twist, Marcella had another of her blackouts, and came round to find she had tied him up and tried to suffocate him with a bag over his head.

After realising what she had done, she gave him resuscitation, but her actions had compromised the police investigation, forcing her to find alternative evidence to hold him accountable for his crimes.

After finding bite marks on his shoulder, she was able to pin the kidnap of May Wier on him.

However, that was not the end of Marcella's troubles, as Detective Williamson's investigation of Andrew Barnes' murder uncovered the fact she had doctored the CCTV footage outside Grace Gibson's house, which revealed Marcella had moved her body.

Jason Backland actor Nicholas Pinnock teased the possibility of another run during an appearance on 'This Morning' on Tuesday.

‘Marcella’ has proved to be a massive hit for ITV, regularly attracting more than seven million viewers.

The drama has been penned by Swedish screenwriter Hans Rosenfeldt, who was behind Scandinavian series ‘The Bridge‘, which airs in the UK on BBC Four.
