Melanie C has spoken about Victoria Beckham’s decision not to join the rest of the Spice Girls on their upcoming tour, saying her former bandmate is “petrified” of performing.
The iconic 90s group will be reuniting as a four-piece this summer, and while fans have been hopeful that Victoria might pop up at a gig or two, Melanie has insisted this definitely won’t be happening.
Speaking on Jay Rayner’s Out To Lunch podcast, Mel told the food critic the five members of the group are “all in a different place but a good place”.
“We are all sad that Victoria won’t be joining us but it is all genuinely very supportive,” she said. “We understand and support her.”
When Jay then asked if they worked hard to try and convince Victoria to take part, Mel replied: “We didn’t, we knew already. I’m sure Victoria wouldn’t mind me saying, The Olympics was hard for her.
“She’s moved on and her life has changed. She just doesn’t have that love of performing and, in fact, it completely petrifies her.”
“I’m sure there are many reasons, obviously,” she continued. “She’s extremely successful and busy and has put her heart into her business and to step away from that and not give it the time she does at the moment would be difficult.
“But I’m sure if she felt passionate about being on stage and loved it, then she’d be there.”
The 13-date Spice World tour will begin in May and see the band perform at stadiums in Ireland and around the UK.
It’ll mark the first time the group has performed together since the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony, where they appeared alongside Victoria.
Two members of the group hit headlines for an unexpected reason last week, as Mel B claimed she once had sex with Geri Halliwell in the 90s.
“She is going to hate me for this because she is all posh in her country house and her husband, but it’s a fact,” she said during an episode of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories.
“It just happened and we just giggled at it and that was it. She had great boobs. We were best friends. It just happened.”
Geri is yet to publicly respond to Mel’s claims, and has previously declined to comment when contacted by HuffPost UK.
