Shopkeeper Dies After Being Attacked Outside Premises

A popular shopkeeper has been killed in an attack outside his shop.

Asad Shah, 40, was found seriously injured in Minard Road, Glasgow, on Thursday night and later died in hospital.

His death has shocked the local residents who described him as a "pillar of the community".

Forensic officers have placed a white tent outside his shop, Shah's Newsagent and Convenience Store, in Shawlands in the south of the city.

Another white tent has been placed some metres down the road.

Local people continued to arrive at the police cordon surrounding the shop to speak to police or lay tributes.

Resident Isabella Graham, 64, said Mr Shah employed her daughter at the shop when she was younger and she cried when she called her to tell her the news.

She said: "He was an amazing, wonderful man, he couldn't do enough for you.

"He wouldn't hurt anybody. Nobody in Shawlands would have a bad word to say about him.

"I can't believe he's gone."

Mrs Graham, who placed flowers at the scene with her young granddaughter, said Mr Shah's family had run the shop for as long as she had lived there, for more than 16 years.

Around a dozen floral tributes are at the cordon. One card read: "Thank you for being the nicest guy on the planet."

Another read: "To Asad, thank you for the joy you brought to our lives.

"We are so sorry for the pain you were put through.

"You showed us that love can span to all of us, regardless of religion."

One message read: "A good man, much loved and a pillar of the community.

"You'll be sorely missed."

Police were called to the scene at 9.05pm on Thursday and found Mr Asad seriously injured.

He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he later died.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Officers are currently pursuing a positive line of inquiry in connection with the death.

"Closures are in place at Pollokshaws Road and Titwood Road while inquiries are conducted at the scene."
