It’s no secret that you have to be incredibly smart to go on ‘University Challenge’, but every so often, one contestant is a cut above and totally outshines the rest.

Enter Monkman. Eric Monkman.

The team captain, who is studying for a Masters in economics at Wolfson, Cambridge, was something of a tour de force during Monday (19 September) night’s show and his outstanding knowledge and enthusiasm didn’t go unnoticed on Twitter:

I love you Monkman #universitychallenge pic.twitter.com/m3Ebhfy4U3

Monkman - he's not the hero we deserve, but he is the one we need. #UniversityChallenge

I don't think I've been nervous watching #UniversityChallenge before. Great contest. Loved #Monkman's passion whether right or wrong.

It wasn’t a total walkover for his team though, and Wolfson, Cambridge narrowly won after a tie-breaker question.

Monkman, don’t ever change.

This isn’t the first time ‘University Challenge’ has attracted a lot of unexpected attention.

Last month, the pop music round was a huge hit with viewers, thanks to the fact the incredibly smart team from Oxford couldn’t recognise tracks by acts including The Clash.
