I am a born and bred Edinburger, so I've celebrated many a New Year by taking to the streets of Edinburgh for their legendary Hogmanay celebrations. This year I decided to visit the event that takes place the night before, the iconic Torchlight Procession. Around 35,000 people, 26 Up Helly Aa' Vikings and 6 pipe bands with over 100 pipers marched the streets of Edinburgh and up to the bonfire and spectacular Son et Lumière display on Calton Hill. It was certainly a magnificent event, for which some is captured below:
It was a great start to the three day celebration for Edinburgh's Hogmanay and felt like a truly out of this world experience. Marching up to Calton Hill, surrounded by Vikings and lit solely by torchlight, was like being transported into a movie. The night had a wonderful atmosphere and used the Edinburgh landscape to it's full potential. It shone the best light on this years celebrations and demonstrated that this city certainly knows how to throw a spectacular Hogmanay.
