Nick Clegg Blue Paint

A 22-year-old man appeared in court on Friday after Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was attacked with blue paint at a party meeting in Glasgow.

Stuart Rodger, from Inverkeithing, Fife, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court Friday afternoon charged with assault. He made no plea and was released on bail.

Clegg and the leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats Willie Rennie were hit by a blue paint bomb during the meeting with grassroots activists on Thursday.

The paint hit the deputy prime minister in the face and on the back of his jacket.

The Scotsman reported that the blue dye had been injected into an egg shell.

Police questioned Rodger following the incident at Woodside Hall in the west of the city, and held him in connection with an alleged breach of the peace and police assault.

He was reported to have had an accomplice, but no other arrests have so far been reported.

Scottish news outlet STV reported the protester was a former LibDem member protesting against the party's decision to go into coalition with the Conservatives in Westminster.

Clegg shrugged off the event, telling Real Radio Scotland: "These things happen. It's not a big deal."

Willie Rennie said: "It was two disgruntled individuals, who chose not to speak about their concerns in advance but were purely interested in a stunt. Their behaviour has only obscured any message that they may have had."

He joked: "I've always wanted a blue streak in my hair but my mother wouldn't let me."

Nick Clegg's spokesman said he would not "allow a bit of paint to stop him speaking to Liberal Democrats in Glasgow - that would be ridiculous", the BBC reported.

Labour MP for Glasgow South Tom Harris condemned the attack, tweeting: "I'm not exactly Clegg's biggest fan but this kind of attack is shameful and quite pathetic."

My goodness politicians these days are delicate doilies. Clegg is 'assaulted' with blue paint; Bush was 'assaulted' by a thrown shoe. Yet they will merrily send off young men and women to face the horrors of war. You'd think the politicians could at least face paint and footwear without resorting to charges of assault.

I Am Certain That There Are Many People In This Country That Would Like To Throw A Blue Coloured Liquid Over Nick Clegg[Myself Included] But It Is Most Definatly Not The Right Thing To Do.

Mr Clegg Has Been Elected As An M.P. by The Voters In His Constituancy And If A Person Does Not Agree With His Views And Actions There Are Other Means Available To Express Dissent.

As For Myself I Write As Many Comments In as Many Places As Is Possible.

Most Being Very Cynical And Sarcastic[It Is Said That Sarcasm Is The Lowest Form Of Wit But It Is A Very Good Way of Poking Fun At Those You Feel Deserve It].

So Why Not Try It.

Would it accidentally prove your point re: sarcasm if I Made Fun Of Your Weird Capitalization Practices?

Who made you the boss of how people are allowed to express dissent in a free society? Sarcasm isn't the lowest form of wit- you've obviously never watched American stand up.

Clegg is more blue these days than whatever colour the liberals are using these days

And he isn't the only one- don't forget Blue Labour.

I'm hoping Labour realises that blue isn't their colour!

Got to laugh at the tory and closet tory claims that this is a " violent attack on an elected official" When the tory press attack non-tory politicians in a truly despicable manner....what would they call that ??
I recall Murdoch`s terrible assault on Neil Kinnock and what about the entire right wing`s attacks on Gordon Brown ??
Y`see I`d call those "violent attacks on an elected official"
You might say two wrongs don`t make a right and I`d agree.......but remember Kinnock`s advice in the face of such hatred....."don`t get mad, get even"

Yes, a random person on the Internet has an opinion you dislike, therefore they must be a member (perhaps even a 'closet' member!) of the evil enemy political tribe. Furthermore, "It's OK to throw blue paint at Nick Clegg because Rupert Murdoch was nasty to Neil Kinnock" is an arguement that I would describe as 'interesting' and 'imaginitive'.

Anyway, I believe the issue here is that a politician should be able to walk around, go to events, talk to people and so on without being harassed, I find this to be a basic and necessary component of a free and open society (your right to swing your arm ends at my nose etc). Engaging in unimaginitive pie-throwing antics and so on are admittedly low on the scale of things but nontheless violate that principle.

First, I didn`t agree with Clegg getting paint thrown over him and the Murdoch press went way, WAY beyond "being nasty" to Kinnock
They attacked him relentlessly day in, day out, name calling, attacking his family, his friends, rubbishing him at every turn
Kinnock was an honest guy serving his country, serving his constituents and did not deserve that kind of treatment......never saw any tory complaining about his disgraceful treatment

'Shameful and pathetic'

Or a mainstay of the British political protest for years?

YOU DECIDE...

If it's a mainstay of British political protest then British political protestors should grow up. As somebody put it recently these sorts of stunts basically amount to low-level violence against elected officials which is why it should and does result in prosecution.

I lean to the Austen school; that this is 'making sport' of them as they're no doubt doing of the working class while bankrupting them.
