PRESS ASSOCIATION -- The Electoral Commission will not open an investigation into payments made to David Cameron's former spin doctor Andy Coulson by his former employer News International.

Mr Coulson received the payments after quitting as News of the World editor as the phone hacking scandal engulfed the now-defunct tabloid.

The watchdog has said there was "no evidence" to suggest that strict rules relating to political party finances had been breached.

Mr Coulson was hired by the Tories in July 2007 on a reported salary of £275,000, six months after he quit as editor of the Sunday newspaper when its royal editor Clive Goodman and private investigator Glenn Mulcaire were jailed for phone hacking.

It was reported last week that for several months after he started his new role, the spin chief was still receiving instalments of money as full settlement of his two-year contract.

Mr Coulson continued to work for Mr Cameron in Downing Street as No 10's communications chief until he quit in January this year as the phone hacking scandal refused to die down.

Labour MP Tom Watson wrote to the Commission questioning whether the severance pay effectively part-funded Mr Coulson's salary.

But a spokeswoman for the watchdog said: "There is no evidence to suggest that there has been a breach of the Political Parties Elections and Referendums Act.

"We won't be opening a case review in to the allegation."

The money that Coulson got was simply part of his compromise agreement.

This is normal commercial practice, so why should anyone think that there's a story here?

Good lawyers and Powerful Friends - can't beat 'em!

Bet Murdoch and Cameron are opening champagne tonight!  One bullet dodged, one to go!  Now, how to avoid Coulson being asked questions about how much Cameron knew of the hacking when Coulson was given his 'second chance' or 'new career path,' depending on one's POV.

Meanwhile, Miliband (Labour) is forcing a vote on the police reduction, calling it reckless, and Clegg (Lib Dem) is silent, undoubtedly hoping that he'll be the next PM when Cameron's Tories get slammed next time around.

And no one is listening to the common people ~ no one at all.

Interesting things are afoot in Britain tonight!

Exactly what I was thinking.
Fox and Murdoch are too important to the takeover of the world to be truly on the carpet.
Corruption grows more intense by the day

Kassandra, I'm having yet another problem with moderation, so my reply to you got circular-filed. Sorry about that.

Astonishing. How much injustice will citizens tolerate before they go back to the streets?

This scandal seems to go much beyond the phone hacking committed by one individual.

When the media, police, politicians and the wealthy are seem as being in bed together it is unseemly.

This scandal has been brewing for a few years and seems not to have been pursued by authorities.

It doesn't matter whether the party funding rules weren't broken. The fact Coulson received money from NI while in the employ of the Tories, gives lie to the claim that Cameron is his own man. Not a Murdoch puppet.
