Feltham and Heston By-Election Voters Should 'Send Message' To Coalition On Economy, Miliband Says

Voters will have a first opportunity to pass their verdict on David Cameron and George Osborne's "catastrophic" handling of the economy in next week's by-election in Feltham and Heston, Labour leader Ed Miliband has said.

Speaking on a visit to the west London constituency, Mr Miliband urged voters to use the December 15 poll to send a message to the coalition Government about the direction they are taking the country.

The parliamentary by-election - sparked by the death last month of veteran Labour MP Alan Keen - comes just a fortnight after Mr Osborne's Autumn Statement, which laid bare the parlous state of the British economy and revealed that the Government's austerity programme will have to extend beyond the next general election.

Mr Miliband said the Chancellor's statement proved the Government's cuts strategy had failed and it was time to change course.

"The Tories had promised they would get the deficit paid down in four years," said the Labour leader.

"But last week George Osborne admitted he would have to borrow £158 billion more than he had planned to pay the bill for its economic failure. The economics are clear: the plan has failed.

"Now I want Feltham and Heston to be the first chance for the people to pass a verdict on the catastrophic course David Cameron and George Osborne have set this country on. I want voters in this by-election to vote Labour and send a clear signal that it is time for a change of plan.

Labour has held Feltham and Heston, a suburban constituency near Heathrow Airport, since 1992.

Mr Keen secured a reduced, but still comfortable, majority of 4,658 in last year's election and at this stage of the Parliament a victory for the second-placed Conservatives would rank as an upset.

The election system is rigged against the ordinary voter because Labour depends on the loyal vote of the public sector and those on welfare benefits to see them through. If Labour has held this seat since 1992, its not much of a risk for them to talk up their chances of re-election is it?

I couldn't agree more. However at the moment we don’t have a real opposition party in parliament.

As the People Before Profit candiate in the Feltham and Heston by-election I would remaind voters that this election needs to be more than a choice between Labout, Conservatives and LibDems, because if any of those parties win, it's a victory for the bankers.

Labour, Conservative and LibDem, are part and parcel of the political establishment and all they all agree that their job is to prop up the banks and to cut public spending. In doing so, the political establishment is putting profit before people. Despite all the bluster and the shouting, all other differences are trivial. As the Autumn statement showed even the Government’s borrowing plans have converged with those of Darling’s original plan.

This is all very well and good but this agenda only suits a very thin layer of society: bankers and the super rich. Practically everybody else - small business people, workers in private industry and public service workers – suffer.

There comes a point when one has to put people before profit. We have now reached that point. And in this by-election there really will be a chance to vote for People Before Profit.

Yes, people do need to send a message to parliament, not just the coalition creeps but the whole damn lot of them by voting outside of the three major parties of this country, they've all been rubbish for many years, the last five alone has proved to the British public that our government is run by thieves and liars of the highest order.
