Frozen Planet Faked? David Attenborough Explains 'We Did It For The Polar Bears'

Frozen Planet

Sir David Attenborough has weighed into the Frozen Planet row to defend the use of footage of polar bear cubs which was not filmed in the Arctic, but in a German zoo.

Fans of the BBC documentary were outraged to learn that the ice nest where polar bears were filmed was a man-made, and that commentary by "national treasure" Attenborough was carefully scripted to avoid making explicit references to the cub's birthplace.

The birth of the polar cubs was a magical centrepiece to episode five of Frozen Planet, with viewers invited into the womb of ice where "the newest polar bears in the world" were seen snow white and blinking.

The BBC defended its treatment of the footage, with the show's producer Kathryn Jeffs explaining that it was both impractical and dangerous to film the polar bears inside the ice nest.

Sir David Attenborough supported her defence, adding that the decision was made for "the safety of the animal".

He told ITV1's This Morning: "If you had tried to put a camera in the wild in a polar bear den, she would either have killed the cub or she would have killed the cameraman, one or the other."

Although Frozen Planet has been criticised for not making its explanation transparent, Attenborough said talking about the zoo during the show's would have ruined Frozen Planet's atmosphere. He added: "It's not falsehood and we don't keep it secret either."

Dear me so many doubters as to the reality of global warming. I assume you draw on the statisitcs provided by the scientific community of the USA. The most polluting nation on the planet.
Any gardener, any observer of the natural world will verify things are not as they should be.
Glaciers are melting, flooding, hurricanes and drought are increasing. The argument as to the rights and wrongs of filming polar bears in the wild or in a German zoo is pathetic. Would you risk the lifes of a Polar Bear and its offspring by attempting to record close ups of the nature we see in frozen planet. I applaud the BBC and Sir David Attenburgh for yet another outstanding record of life on our planet. One day if we are not very very carefull programmes such as these may be the only record of life as it was. Lets be honest in the end mans greed will be his downfall. The desire for a quick fix will be our undoing unless we change. It is possible to live and let live. It is possible to develope green alternatives to everything we simply need the desire and commitment . I fear that by the time we wake up and stop destroying our planet, it will be too late. We have only one home and we cant move house. Anyway to the idiots who are in denial I say wake up. I shall be buying Frozen Planet I think its amazing.

Don't panic rvall010, you've been fed a yarn. Hurricanes have actually been decreasing. Glaciers have been melting overall for at least 150 years, and the worst floods and droughts we know about all happened before the modern era of the last 30 years or so which the alarmists tell us is when our CO2 has started to take over control of the climate system. Naughty alarmists, you even fooled DA in the autumn of his life. Actuallym shame on your alarmists for doing that.

Polar bears get born- Polar bears die- What they don't do is get stuck on 'Melting' ice flow! The real hypocrisy is the presentation of the global warming aspect and describing normal arctic changes to the ice cap as abnormal and not pointing out the increase in the antarctic ice cap. The planet is getting colder- get your woolies on, it's called 'Climate change' and has been around for ever. The insignificant amount of CO2 produced by burning fossil fuels does not affect the climate!

The BBC has already sold its soul to the greens (e.g. see http://www.bishop-hill.net/blog/), and the blessed RA had already been taken in by them, so this is more important than it would seem at first glance. The Brtis really do have a state broadcaster committed to climate alarm propaganda, and suppressing well-informed criticism of such alarmism. Not a pretty sight in a country once famed for freedoms.

Not a pretty sight in a country once famed for freedoms...... wake up . Our country, our BBC, our Sir David Attenburgh were making factual natural world documentaries when the rest of the world were still asleep. Are you aware that the USA will not broadcast parts of this programme for fear it will effect the next election. Home of the brave and Land of the free ? Im proud of the BBC and Sir David and all the men and women who brought this to our screens at great risk to themselfs. GOD BLESS THE UNITED KINGDOM to steal a well worn out cliche I mean if hes gonna bless the usa he may as well bless us too. We at least are trying to protect our planet!

As good intentions go, rvall010, it is hard to beat 'protecting our planet'. But those who push climate alarmism based on flimsy evidence are not protectors. They rubbish our scientific method, corrupt our scientific institutions, do not hesitate to deply fear tactics even in schools to recruit for their 'cause'. They are rubbishers. Meanwhile, Mother Nature is doing a fine job in refuting each and every one of their projections where and when it encounters the real world. Funny old business.

Oh My God. I am so offended at being lied to the BBC over the birth of the Polar Bears. I thinkI will hot trot it to my solicitors and sue the Beeb for mentally anquish and stress. To be lied to in such a way is truly dispicable and not what I though they BBC would do. These factual programmes are meant to be factual and not stage managed.

Do I mean these comments?. Course I don't.

The Frozen Planet series as every other wildlife series the BBC does are worth the licence fee alone and I fully support the explanations given by the BBC as to why the cubs were filimed being born in captivity. Does it matter that that they were. No it doesnt. The fact that you witnessed them being born is still great viewing.
Do these people who claim they were deceived by the BBC think that television isn't stage managed anyway. It is because it has to be and a good load of editing has to be done to make a programme.
And in case you think that the weather man is standing in front of a map of Great Britain when he is telling you the weather. He is not. He is standing infont a blank chromakey screen.

So I have one comment to say to you lot who are complaining. You really need to get a life and get out into the world more. You are sad individuals.

Quote 'These factual programmes are meant to be factual and not stage managed. ' But we see that they are not. They are crafted to deceive us. So why don't you mean your first comments? You ought to. Not for your being offended or upset, since that is merely being feeble, but for the hypocrisy of an organisation, the BBC, that was once, a long time ago, highly regarded for its integrity. Now it has long been invaded by a distinctly shoddy bunch, and is not to be trsuted on climate, as well on a list of other things.

It sounds very much like one of Toady Bliars explanations of his inexcusable dishonesty.

I absolutely loved the series, and it doesn't concern me one bit that this very difficult and complicated scene was filmed elsewhere.
The habitat was fully explained and it would have been very irresponsible, to say nothing of potentially dangerous, to be in close proximity with a nursing female polar bear and cubs for months on end.

This series, as with all of Sir David's series in the past, was informative, eye-opening and extremely well presented.
In my opinion, the series loses none of its impact, relevance, accuracy & importance as a result.

do people have nothing better to do than complain out a truely fantastic program. do people really think you would be able to film this in the wild. David has brought incredible facts to us over many years and those who fell it necessary to moan are very sad..

Next thing we'll be reading is how everyone is outraged to discover that the footage from all the dinosaur documentaries is fake as well.... It would have been irresponsible of them to be breaking into a wild bear's nest and disturbing the young just to get a bit of film footage. Maybe they could have clarified it a little better, maybe by use of a disclaimer in the credits or something but its hardly worth complaining about. In the end it come down to this - did you enjoy the programme and did you learn anything? Yes? then dont complain.

I think Kathryn Jeffs was absolutely correct in her explanation about the film. As we have seen from the `Freeze Frame` footage at the end of each episode the boys filming it are lucky to be alive. It`s a wonder they`ve still got all of their fingers and toes. Filming when they can over months on end ? Minus 50 degrees and colder? 80 mph winds and stronger? No thanks! My hat`s off to you boys!

Hmm - I wonder how many more of my non offensive comments are going to deleted by the AOL thought police?

and there was me wondering how a cameraman managed to find a pregnant polarbear hidden under the snow n ice, sneak up to it without disturbing it, set up a b****y big camera, bore a hole into the den, lie outside in sub zero tempratures for weeks on end waiting for the cubs to pop out and not manage to wake the bear while he smoked 600 + benson n hedges while waiting for all that to happen. its almost as amazing as my non offensive comment being posted.

How ridiculous. There is no greater fan of The Frozen Planet than me and I certainly wasn't outraged. Anyone with an ounce of common sense would have realised that this wasn't the real thing - an arctic bear's nest .
This is a wonderful series with superb cinematography. Who is trying to whip up a controversy?

Couldn't agree more with you more. This is a great series. I wasn't outraged to find out about this at all. I wonder who in fact is outraged. The series is still one of the best nature documentaries I've seen. I guess with today's reality TV culture some people would have preferred to see the cameramen eaten by the polar bear. This is definitely blown out of proportion.

It was filmed in a Dutch zoo not a German zoo.
please correct this in this article and the related articles.
