British Backpacker Held Over Murder Of Czech Woman In Costa Rica

British Man Held Over Costa Rica Murder

A British national has been arrested by police in Costa Rica in connection with the murder of a young Czech woman, according to reports.

The man, named by local police as 20-year-old Alfred Alexandros Mill Saunders, is understood to have been backpacking in the Central American country.

He allegedly stabbed 22-year-old Alexandra Drbohlavova to death at a campsite in the town of Colonia La Libertad, 125 miles north west of the capital, San Jose, the country's Judicial Investigation Agency said.

It is believed both young people were volunteering on an environmental programme in the area.

The suspect appeared in court last week and a judge ordered he be held in custody for six months.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm a British national has been arrested in Costa Rica on Thursday 29 December 2011. We are providing consular assistance."
