Iran Oil Embargo: William Hague Warns Blocking Strait Of Hormuz Would Be Illegal

William Hague Iran

William Hague told MPs there was "grave concern" about the actions of the Iranian government as a Conservative MP claimed the country was "the new Soviet Union."

Answering an urgent question from Tory MP Robert Halfon in the House of Commons on the EU sanctions imposed on Iran by EU on Monday, the foreign secretary said: "Sanctions are a means to an end not an end in themselves.

"We are ready to talk at any point if Iran puts aside its pre-conditions and returns for negotiations."

Halfon praised the UK government saying they "could not have done more" to try and contain Iran, adding: "No-one wants war but tragically it is looking increasingly possible."

"The question must now be asked, are we facing the prospect of a nuclear dictatorship in the Middle East?"

William Hague admitted there was a "very serious danger of wider proliferation of nuclear weapons across the Middle East" if Iran develops a nuclear weapon.

Hague's words came after Philip Hammond said the UK could send military reinforcements to the Gulf if the dispute with Iran escalates

The defence secretary told journalists the decision to send HMS Argyll as part of an international flotilla of warships through the sensitive Strait of Hormuz on Sunday sent a "clear signal" to Tehran.

Hague told the Commons it would be a mistake if Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, as many of their oil exports go through the region.

"It must be borne in mind that 95% of Iran’s oil exports, representing over 80% of its foreign earnings, transit the Strait of Hormuz. It is very much against Iran’s interests to seek to close the Strait to oil exports," he said.

He added that Britain maintains a "constant presence in the region as part of our enduring contribution to Gulf security".

"At the weekend HMS Argyll and a French vessel joined a US carrier group transiting through the Strait of Hormuz. This was a routine movement but it underlined the unwavering international commitment to maintaining rights of passage under international law.

"Any attempt by Iran to block the Strait would be both illegal and unsuccessful."

Prime minister David Cameron, Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy have issued a statement amid EU oil sanctions imposed against Iran on Monday.

I see Thatcher's love child has found something to say again....!
Iran is no threat to the west at all. but if you keep poking a wasp nest it will react.
Iran will only block the strait if they themselves are blockaded, learn!
As yet they have done nothing wrong to warrant this extreme war-mongering and abuse.
Leave them alone!

well, we shall see if the Iranians block the straits, and will shal see the west response personally it think its all bluff, a naval task force sits very near to the straits,to block would mean either mining it or sinking tankers, and since tankers are escorted by us navy ships, and royal navy ones i cant see how the mad midget will accomplish this, with out having his entire speed boat navy sunk on site,

iran wil bluster and rattle its dummy, but action no maybe a token show of a few rubber dingys, but against two aircraft carriers, come on,,each with 90 advanced fighters per ship plus the us forces on deigo garcia and those in saudi and oman and the tast force in the red sea..nah war ,just iran gobbing off against the big Satan

William Hague - that's the feller - always forget his name - worshipped Thatcher as a 16 year old. Failed as a leader of the Tories [must have been some failure as did IDS teh backroom boy of Welfare and Social Obligations. Willie Hague is now about to fail again as Foreign Secretary with toublleatmill?

It was *illegal to invade Iraq and Afhganistan....did not stop USA or other countries from doing so.

I think the USA and 'other lions led by donkeys' governments have also learned a lesson, a very costly one. The next war with Iran will be a missile based action backed up by bombing once Iran's air defences have been neutralised. This will not be a token strike but the full hit. We cannot let Iran get away with thinking 'ok we got a smack in the face but we can carry on with what we were doing before the bombings.' It will also mean the deployment of the US's most powerful non nuclear bomb. Nothing less will have any meaning to the mad mullahs and generals.

Here is a better idea. Leave Iran alone. The UK and the US have been attacking and harassing Iran or the last 100 years.

http://www.iranchamber.com/history/coup53/coup53p1.php

The operation, code-named TP-AJAX, was the blueprint for a succession of CIA plots to foment coups and destabilize governments during the cold war - including the agency's successful coup in Guatemala in 1954 and the disastrous Cuban intervention known as the Bay of Pigs in 1961. Agency officers orchestrating the Iran coup worked directly with royalist Iranian military officers, handpicked the prime minister's replacement, sent a stream of envoys to bolster the shah's courage, directed a campaign of bombings by Iranians posing as members of the Communist Party, and planted articles and editorial cartoons in newspapers.

www.iranchamber.com/history/articles/arming_iraq.php

This chronology of the United States' sordid involvement in the arming of Iraq can be summarized in this way: The United States used methods both legal and illegal to help build Saddam's army into the most powerful army in the Mideast outside of Israel. The US supplied chemical and biological agents and technology to Iraq when it knew Iraq was using chemical weapons against the Iranians. The United States did not act alone in this effort. The Soviet Union was the largest weapons supplier, but England, France and Germany were also involved in the shipment of arms and technology.

I like your confdience emillio11, "once Iran's air defences have been neutralised". Bomber Harris said he could do that to Germany and every airforce leader of all countries have been saying it ever since. Yet it never happens. Israel got the closest in the 6 day war but they never succeeded either. Look at Lybia. They said that we would be doing that and right to the end they were still putting up flack. Not possible I'm afraid. They can be reduced but never illiminated.

Fur phuques sake , we cant afford another war, why do we have to be in every war that starts, can we look after our elderly first, and pay off the 1 trillion we owe.

THE ROVING EYE
Europe at war with Iran
By Pepe Escobar
Three BRICS members (Russia, India and China), plus Japan and Iran - a mighty mix of the world's largest producers and consumers of energy - are already trading, or about to trade, in their own currencies. Russia and Iran have just started trading in rials and roubles. All of these powers have bilateral agreements - inexorably surging to multilateral; and that translates as the US dollar slowly fading as the global reserve currency, with all the seismic consequences this implies.

They can also engage in large barter deals which means no money has to move at all.

Send the Government in FIRST and then see who the cowards are!
20:38 on 24/01/2012
And how do we pay for this one? Who's children will be sacrificed? Iran knows we cannot support our sabre rattling

Cut the armed forces then get us involved in a war? I know Cameron is a big admirer of Thatcher, but really! You can bet your life that it will not be his family members or those of his city chums taking any risks. Whose war will it be and who expects to benefit?

Yes indeed war, is the only option to the dire straights, which all trading countries are in, our selves included, it is the only way out, to clear the decks and debts of all the incompetent politicians. Our own included most profoundly. All wars in the past began and ended this way, it becomes a kind of cleansing of humanity process....Stand by, as they say....
