David Cameron expressed hope today that Syrian president Bashar al-Assad would leave office this year.

In an interview with American news network CNN, however, the prime minister admitted he did not know whether that would happen.

Asked whether he expected President Assad to be gone by Christmas, he said: "I would certainly hope so, but I'm not going to make a forecast."

Cameron, interviewed in the Swiss ski resort of Davos where he is attending the World Economic Forum, said the international community should be "tightening the ratchet" on the Assad regime in any way it could.

But he said no one was talking about military intervention.

"This is not the same as Libya and we shouldn't pretend that it is," he said.

"I think what we should be doing is tightening the ratchet in all the ways we can, building up and working with the Syrian opposition - yes, of course, working with the Arab League, yes of course, but I don't think anyone's talking about military action."

British diplomats are pushing the UN Security Council to back the Arab League's call for President Assad, whose regime faces international condemnation for repression and violence, to step aside.

The Security Council could vote as early as next week on a new draft resolution being drawn up by Britain and France with input from Qatar, Morocco, the United States, Germany and Portugal.

But it is unclear whether Russia - which, together with China, vetoed a European-drafted resolution in October that condemned Syria and threatened it with sanctions over its 10-month crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators - is planning to block the latest initiative.

Well, I think it`s been simply divine to see so many tyrants/ oppressors bite the dust, so to speak and at such rapid speed also, gr8 to see so much people power globally!

You mean like Iraq , Egypt ,Libya etc , where the different factions are now killing each other after the demise of the tyrants ? !!!.

I don`t mean like Iraq! Also I think absolutely insane they are killing each other, as I`m a believer of the tree of life! Tragically it`s a man`s thing to use weapons against one another, women have a more logical point of view, a more civilised approach! As 4 religion faults and flaws in all religions, as they oppress or discriminate etc. Positive there will be calm after the storms, and hopefully more freedom of speech and choice, which is everyones right!

Unfortunately, it's the wrong people as far as the USA and UK are concerned and we daren;t do anything about China because they're the ones who have secured the USA's debt. Clever people, they've won the economic war by stealth.

Dave must think he is one of the heads of the EU. I thought only they could remove national leaders without discussing it with the population. Despite the troubles (which are very sad). There is no evidence that the majority of the Syrian population want Assad to go or are against him (be mindful of media manipulation). If he did fall it is possible that an extreme islamic fundamentalist organisation could take over. Then perhaps Dave would be pleading for someone like Assad to take charge. Why dont we and the US learn?

No oil, that's the difference isn't it Dodgy Dave?

Absolutely! Colonialism is alive and well.....but only where there is oil, minerals, gold, strategic military advantage or an easy steal involved. Cameron gets his script handed to him by the US.
