Pictures Of The Day: Slum Fires In India, Chinese New Year And Freezing Winter

Pictures Of The Day

First Posted: 31/01/2012 14:58 Updated: 31/01/2012 14:58

Scenes from around the world capture raw shots of emotion, as a woman in New Delhi sits near the remains of her smoldering hut, after a slum fire in India's capital city.

There's ribald revelling too, as a Chinese folk artist performs at a temple fair to celebrate the Lunar New Year of Dragon in Qingdao, China.

Eastern Europe is suffering a severe winter, one of the coldest experienced for decades. Record low temperatures were registered around Bulgaria on Tuesday, as the mercury continued to drop, threatening shipping on the Danube and closing hundreds of schools.

A woman stares through a frozen window pane in Sofia, while another man rode a bicycle on an icy street in the city.

Meanwhile there's basketball slam dunks as Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls rebounds against JaVale McGee of the Washington Wizards and a lonely looking pheasant in some snow closer to home.

A woman sits sadly by her home ravaged by fire in New Delhi!! Why are there slums in the 21st century in New Delhi, India? India is one of the wealthiest countries on Earth, never mind what you read in the press and what charities say, any country that can afford a space programme can afford to help it's poor, they spend zillions of dollars on this programme and on nuclear weapons. Why??
The country that threatens them or percieved to be a threat to them is Pakistan, another so called third world country, since I was at school I've known Pakistan to be RIGHT next door to India, and vice versa, so what would they do with a nuke? They'd be blowing themselves up wouldn't they? And believe me I know, nukes know no boundaries, they just go right on through the customs check point as if there wasn't one.
I say that both countries should start clearing their slums and caring for their people so that the rest of the world doesn't have to look at pictures of this poor woman again. And get RID of their nuclear weapons.
