A couple who scooped a £10.2 million lottery jackpot have defended their right to claim benefits more than six years later.

Mick and Jean O'Shea won the huge EuroMillions sum in 2005, but Mr O'Shea still receives £500 a month disability allowance because it is not means-tested, the Sun reported.

The former builder told the newspaper: "I worked for 40 years and I'm entitled to it. I've been getting it since about 1996.

"I declared the win to the authorities at the time, but it doesn't matter as it's not means-tested."

He said he has osteoarthritis in his legs and rheumatoid arthritis in his hands and has recently had a hip operation.

According to the newspaper, Mrs O'Shea, 72, said of the allowance: "It's for his eyesight and arthritis. We're entitled to it."

Mr O'Shea, 73, also receives a new car every three years under the Government's Motability scheme for disabled drivers, it was reported.

The couple live in Sneinton, Nottingham, but reportedly also had a house built in Co Kerry, Ireland, after their win.

Mr O'Shea said the pair give away 10 times more than they receive to good causes every year.

Under Government reforms, disability living allowance will be replaced by personal independence payments, which will involve more rigorous checks on claimants but will not be means-tested.

A spokesman for the Department for Work and Pensions said: "We do not discuss individual cases but these specific benefits and allowanc

Even if they don't spend any more money they will be paying the taxman at least £50000 per annum which will pay for all the benefits all the people posting on here have. In fact people are so ungrateful in this country he should move to somewhere else and really enjoy his wealth. Probably get full medical attention as well.

Just because you are entitled to something does not mean you should take it. The Motability scheme is a charity for people who need a car but probably couldn't afford one, to take advantage of this plus the monthly allowance that he legally entitled to really is morally off. I am happy they won the money, good on them. However, I can't understand why you would want it, you don't need it. This is more about greed than need. You do not need the car, go any buy yourself one and enjoy your lucky wealth :-)

This guy has put more back into the UK infrastructure over his 40 years working than a hell of a lot of other people, including our politicians who claim for packets of biscuits and porn films.

This guy obviously has principles about what he has done and paid for and what he is entitled to, like the vast majority of us. The fact that he won the lottery, like all of us would like to do, should not change his principles and I'm glad to see that it has not.

If you don't take what you are entitled to Mr. O'Shea, there are a lot of people who will try for it and indeed probably get it in a dishonest way.

Glad to see that you have stood by your principles and your rights and good luck with your winnings.

Ron, Glasgow.

Once upon a time the inhabitants of this country had a moral code and a conscience, but it would seem that since a certain "lady" said that their is no such thing as society that everyone is out to get as much as they can for themselves. These people do not NEED this money it is purely GREED. Would the Queen claim it if Philip was "not so good on his pins"? They may have "paid in" but surely the luck of £10,000,00 should make them think of whether they should forgo their entitlement. Even some of our working bankers have given up what they were entitled to!

Its about time a uk citizen got what they are entitled to!! If he worked and paid into the system then let him take some back. All too often do we here of illegal immigrants abusing our benefit system having never contributed a brass farthing to it.
Good on yer mate, glad to see my taxes are supporting a british citizen for once

I think the entire DLA system should be looked at, I think too many people are getting the benefit when they are not entitled to it.

I work at a large car dealership, that operates a Motability scheme. I see at least 10 people a month who are claiming highest rates of both components of DLA, I would say 80% of these people seem to have no walking difficulties and often chose impractical cars. The highest rate of the mobility component of DLA is supposed to be awarded to people who cannot or have difficult walking 50 metres, yet they seem to have no problems walking around our showrooms for and manage to get in and out of our cars?!
09:12 on 07/02/2012
And its "assessments" like yours that deny people who need it their entitlement. Do you see them EVERY day? Are you completely inline with all legislation that defines the DLA procedure? No. So you are neither qualified or able to make that judgement.

Mick, worked all his life and is entitled. Nice to see it going to a tax payer for a change

I personally haven't a issue with the O'Shea's claiming the benefits. Since has he's mentioned in the article, he has earned it with 'forty years of full time work'. What I do have an issue with, is with their moral character, and the government that allows such a thing to continue.

There has definitely been a steady moral decline over the years, and a social system that was originally set up to help the needy, has become a free for all take take take society that couldn't care less about anyone else as long as they are OK.

This story sums up the UK to a tee,
Everybody is so quick to blame others for the reason why the country is skint, and all agree that something has to be done in which to get the country back on its feet. But the thing is be it MPs having to do without their John Lewis catalogue, rich people doing without their child benefit or even the political elites demanding we pay more money to the Third world. It seems that the only people doing without are those who really could do with an extra penny or two.
21:04 on 06/02/2012
I agree, there are too many cockroaches that have taken advantage of a system that was originally put in place to help the genuine needy.

The only examples I have seen are The executive who has wavered his 1.2 million bonus from HSBC, and Bill Gates who had set up a fund worth many billions to help the needy worldwide.

so financially he needs the benefit and morally because hes entitled 10 million pounds doesnt change his mind? this man is deluded if he things the majority of people will say good on you.I say mr 72 year old greedy man go away but you cant live in peice .Because people where you live wil recognise you because youve put your photo in the paper you want a peaceful life well mr millionaire youve deffo gone about it the wrong way.Old and wise you definitely are not

One of the benefits of DLA mobility is that you get a blue badge. As far as I'm aware you can't get a badge without it.
If you have osteo and rheumatoid arthiritis these badges are woth their weight in gold as you don't have to walk as far - it can mean the difference between doing your shopping etc or not getting it done.
No matter how much money you have you can't cure these illnesses and you still need to get around.
What I find interesting about this is the timing of the story. I'm sure the sun knew about the O'Shea's situation years ago.
Could it be that they are joining in with the Govts campaign to stigmatise the disabled as scroungers. No they wouldn't do that would they.

The story did not seem to be questioning his "BLUE BADGE". I do question the car though.

Actually it kinda is... If you get higher rate of mobility component of DLA, then your automatically entitled to a blue badge.

However he could apply for a blue badge through his local council, but he will have to show that he has medical problems.

i was made redundant 7 years ago,and received 4k.when i went to sign on they told me i had to use my redundancy money to pay my rent on the flat.i do not understand how these people are continuing to receive this money.i thought if you had enough in your bank account whether disabled or not then that money should be taken into consideration.
