A policeman was seriously injured when he was slashed with a knife in Northern Ireland.

The officer, who was wounded in the face and back of the head, was attending a domestic incident in Lurgan, Co Armagh, at around 2am when the incident occurred.

Police had been responding to a report of a man locked inside a house in the Kilwilkie estate with two small children.
As they tried to enter the property the man allegedly attacked one officer. A second officer intervened and sustained a slash wound to his head.

He was taken to hospital for treatment where his condition was described as stable.

A 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently in police custody.

The two children present in the house, aged one and three, were uninjured in the incident.

Officers undertaking an investigation in the wake of the stabbing came under attack during the night, with six petrol bombs, bricks and bottles thrown at them.

The area returned to normal at 4am.

Police Service of Northern Ireland superintendent Jason Murphy said: "I have nothing but praise for the actions of the brave officers who responded to this call.

"The officer who was attacked has received treatment for a slash wound to the back of his head and a cut on his face.

"He and the others who attended responded to a call for help during a busy time.

"Their main priority was to ensure the safety of all those involved, particularly the two young children in the house. They did this with no thought for their own safety and with self restraint and professionalism.

"These are the officers who are keeping our community safe.

"It was more than disappointing to see those officers come under attack and the actions of those who threw petrol bombs and bricks can only be condemned."

one question...wht was it a domestic?

Kilwilkie in Lurgan is definitely not one of the most popular places for a policeman, especially in the middle of the night. Thank god, this 'incident' wasn't a set up by some seriously disturbed individuals waiting to 'take out a few pigs'.
Their response of not taking that guy down is remarkable, but very understandable as mentioned somewhere else. To 'a certain type of people' in that area every breath the police takes is wrong, they can never do any good whatsoever. By not responding with serious force this police officer prevented a few days of riots.

One of the few areas that the Dissidents have support unfortunately.

a domestic? the report says the man was on his own with the children.
I have to say that if anyone tried to enter my homwe at that time of the morning, against my will, the response would be violent

earlsspg - Police in Northern Ireland don't need warrants to enter properties and as they all carry Glock pistols and are authorised to use them difficult to see why they did not respond forcefully

Perhaps because they are not the Metropolitn police.
19:40 on 05/02/2012
Because they are taught to meet force with the minimum appropriate force to protect theirs or anothers life or safety. There will always be the risk that a cop gets injured rather than use ultimate force to protect another, himself or herself. This cop was lucky not to be more seriously injured and I wish him a speedy and full recovery as I am sure do the vast majority of the public wherever they are from.

It is not acceptable for policeman to be stabbed and I hope that he will make a full recovery.

Hope the officer gets better soon.

Wes, your posts are usually spot on.
This one seems to be an exception. Or have I misread it ?
No, you don't have to have money to behave with decency, but I would suggest it does help.....

Yes it was an error on my part, sorry wes.

Hope the officer makes a full recovery and the accused a life sentence its the only way to stop this sort of thing happening. Whatever your view on the police how many of us go to work thinking is this the day i get stabbed or shot??
