Tim Farron Compares UK With Syria On Non-Elected Lords

Tim Farron Lords Syria Uk

Liberal Democrat president Tim Farron has compared the legitimacy of the British Government to the brutal Syrian regime because of the unelected House of Lords.

Speaking on Sky News' Murnaghan programme, Mr Farron said it was not sustainable for half of Britain's Parliament to be appointed.

He was questioned about the allocation of 20 days of Parliamentary time to debating the issue in the coming months.

On the programme, Mr Farron followed Foreign Secretary William Hague who was quizzed about the situation in Syria and the Falklands.

Mr Farron said: "Isn't it ludicrous you were talking to William Hague about many undemocratic countries overseas and here we are and half of our legislature are being appointed and not democratically elected?

"I know it's not a sexy issue but it's unbelievably important if we are going to have a democracy that is even remotely modern.

"How can we have a Government that is even remotely legitimate, under whoever's banner it might be, if you've got half of our Parliament appointed, some of whom have inherited their places there?

"So, yes, it is very important. It won't be going on any of my leaflets because it's not really a top campaigning issue.

"But even though it is not, it is crucial to the future of our democracy and the Liberal Democrats are committed to making sure democracy is at least dragged into the 20th century."

Dermot Murnaghan suggested it was a "bit of a stretch" to compare the House of Lords with Middle Eastern regimes.

Mr Farron said: "If you have a government that is not elected that is a national embarrassment in one way and it is something we should all be concerned about."

Mr Farron said the Commons would need to spend less than 20 days on the issue of "dinosaurs" in both Houses if Parliament accepted the need to reform.

A better comparison would be with the Islamic Republic of Iran. There are only two nations in the world with religious representatives who sit as of right in the legislative assmbly.
Iran has ayotollahs, and the UK has bishops.

Farron is right to pose the question. How can the UK and the US pretend to have moral leverage when they don't do the right thing, either? "Do as I say, not as I do" isn't working anymore.

The house of lords show more compassion, understanding than the elected buffons in the house of commons...and to make a comparison with the people of syria being slaughterd by the syrian government is sick and should aplogise to the syrian people.

As long as they continue to disbelieve Leviticus and Deuteronomy then they’ll never be as trashy as god-obsessed Syria

And lets see who voted this lot in with a mandate to make the poor pay?

Labour lost- after making the poor pay with the abolition of the 10p tax rate!

And what happened to the old independent BBC? Now mouthpiece of government, EU and US

Tim Farron has probably proved why there will never be a Lib Dem Government. They may be in a coalition now but that's it for them. The next Govt will not need them. Not at least while Ed Miliband is making the Labour Party unelectable.

If se had a vote tomorrow to abolish this Parliament--a simple ytes, or no--I'd bet it was the nays that had it. That would be democracy. :)

We don't have a democracy; we have all three main political parties trying to squeeze into the centre ground of UK politics, all scared stiff of straying too far to the left or right of the line. I personally value the role of an unelected, independent upper house, unburdened by the need to toe the party line and able to bring common sense to some of the ludicrous, dogmatic legislation that the main parties try to impose upon us. If they are forced to become 'democratically elected' there will be no such independent analysis and therefore they would become entirely superfluous. You might as well abolish the Lords altogether.

totally agree and thankyou for that.

I agree 100%. Only when politicians move into the house of Lords do they actually have the freedom and courage to stand up for what they believe and not what the party tells them. Long live the House of Lords. Those who wish it removed have very dubious motives. They don't want any higher authority to challenge their stupidity and short term idiotic solutions to long term problems. I'm sure some of our liberal and left wing members of society will disagree with me, so I guess that gives what I say even more credibility!

Why are we ruled by people who we have not elected in Europe then if he is os opposed to unelected people (not our elected representatives but those from other countries) - Lib Dem typical claptrap if they had a majority in the lords he would be in favour. Comparing our system with that of Syria is unreal. The only reality is that people like Mr Farron do not listen to the people otherwise we would have had a vote on the EU and not gone into the recent wars including poking our nose into Lybia.

libs think they speak for everyone but generally they say all the facts to different people when they think they want to hear it. i.e fightring local elections on national issues. general on local issues.

you can"t beat a liberal, the clue is in the name of the party, after there show in this goverment i would think its all over for them. I have rarely seen a party of fools like this lot they have no idea of public feeling, they are more interested in the rights of people not born in this country. They are proven liars the list is endless THORPE ASHDOWN HUHNE Aprty of complete failure. Sadly its time to move on from the 3 major parties well 2 really as Liberals only there to make the numbers up they live in cloud cuckoo land, Great comparrison though the house of lords and the middle east where planet is he from. And more important what planet are the people who elected from ?

So does this mean you can eliminate bureaucrats and regulatory agencies too?

That would be nice.

He is so correct, only those elected should control our country, so sad that those elected are so bad at it
