Falkland Islands: UN Chief Ban Ki-Moon Appeals To Britain And Argentina For Calm

Ban Ki Moon

Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations Secretary General has appealed for calm in the escalating dispute over the Falkland Islands, as Argentina took their claim of sovereignty to the General Assembly and Security Council.

In a statement issued on Friday afternoon, Ban Ki-moon expressed concern about the "increasingly strong exchanges between the governments of Argentina and the UK".

It added that he had: "Expressed the hope that the governments of Argentina and the United Kingdom will avoid an escalation of this dispute and resolve differences peacefully and through dialogue".

Argentina's foreign minister arrived in New York on Friday to officially protest about Britain's "militarisation" of the seas around the disputed islands.

It comes after Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner hit out at the UK's decision to send the Duke of Cambridge and one of its most modern navy warships to the South Atlantic region.

In a speech to an audience including Falkland war veterans on Wednesday, she said the move posed a risk to "international security" before announcing the official complaint would be made.

Addressing politicians yesterday, Ms Kirchner said: "In a few hours our chancellor leaves for New York to make a presentation to the United Nations about the militarisation and the introduction of nuclear arms in the zone."

A statement from Argentina's foreign ministry added: "In accordance with the instructions received from the President of the Argentinian Republic, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, the Chancellor (Foreign Minister) Hector Timerman will meet with Ambassador Kodjo Menan, president of the United Nations Security Council to present the Argentinian complaint against the militarisation that the United Kingdom is carrying out from the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic.

"Furthermore the Chancellor will personally inform the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Ambassador Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser and the body's Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon of the violation by the United Kingdom of around 40 United Nations resolutions which call for dialogue between the said country and Argentina to peacefully resolve the conflict initiated in 1833 with the military invasion of the Falkland Islands."

Mr Timerman will also meet with the president of the UN Decolonisation Committee, the ministry said.

The complaint comes amid simmering tensions between London and Buenos Aires in the run-up to the 30th anniversary of the 1982 Falklands war, which saw Argentinian forces invade the archipelago in a row over its sovereignty.

In December, Prime Minister David Cameron accused the Buenos Aires administration of "colonialism" after the Mercosur grouping of countries, which includes Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Paraguay, announced that it would ban ships sailing under the Falkland Islands flag from docking at their ports.

Last week Prince William began a six-week posting in the Falklands region in his role as an RAF search and rescue pilot, while the Government has also revealed it is to send one of its newest destroyers, HMS Dauntless, to the South Atlantic.

The Type 45 destroyer is due to set sail for the region on her maiden mission in the coming months to replace frigate HMS Montrose.

Ms Kirchner said it was difficult to see how "the sending of an immense and modern destroyer accompanied by the Royal heir who we would have liked to see in civilian clothes and not in military uniform" was not a show of purposeful military strength by the UK.

It has also been reported that The Royal Navy is sending a nuclear submarine to the region to protect the islands from possible Argentinian military action. This has not been confirmed by the Ministry of Defence.

Britain has held the Falkland Islands, known as Las Malvinas in Argentina, since 1833.

I love their complaints. Let me think what happened the last time the UK lowered our defences on that island, oh yes Argentina invaded!

If the Argentinians thought they had a chance of invading the islands they would have done so already. Thirty years ago they invaded a poorly defended island, today the UK has warships and submarines (allegedly) within striking distance, not such an easy target. There is no way the UK will allow the Argentinians to take sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.

If Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner would stop causing so much trouble and tension, mind her own business and stop interfering in the business of other countries, there would be no need for our armed services to prepare for trouble in the defence of the Falkland Islanders who have clearly indicated their democratic wishes.

It is perfectly reasonable, given the last displayed aggression by Argentina for our armed services to prepare for invasion. We learnt at great collateral cost what being unprepared meant in the last war, do they seriously think we are going to trust them again, she MUST be stupid.

Its about time she understood there is NO negotiation over the Island and its people unless they want it. What part of the word NO does she not understand.

The Prime Minister should give one more emphatic no through the United Nations and let her make the first move.

***Argentina's foreign minister arrived in New York on Friday to officially protest about Britain's "militarisation" of the seas around the disputed islands****

The hypocrisy is hilarious.

Argentina, who once invaded the Falklands, complaining about militarisation.

The Falklanders have made it clear they want to be British, that is final.

Now the Argentinian colonialists need to back off and calm down and accept their wishes.

The Falklands are British. They will remain British as long as the people there wish to be. Whether the president of Argentina likes it or not.

Ok we should make a deal, let them have the Falklands and we will have the USA back, oh and India, Australia and Canada etc.
The United nations upholds the right of all populations to self determination, if the Falklanders want to remain British then thats the end of the story.

I am fairly certain the USA, Australia and Canada etc have no desire to return.

Interesting:
"Furthermore the Chancellor will personally inform the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Ambassador Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser and the body's Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon of the violation by the United Kingdom of around 40 United Nations resolutions which call for dialogue between the said country and Argentina to peacefully resolve the conflict initiated in 1833 with the military invasion of the Falkland Islands."

Each and every time the Uk has offered to take this issue to the UN, Argentina has back out. The Argentina invaded in 1982 and so naturally the welcome mat has been taken away.

OH yes one last thing, as much as Argentina bitches about the Uk sending a destroyer (In march) to the South Atlantic. They leave out the Russian fleet currently parked off Brazil. You know that fleet which docked in Syria last month.

I like the idea of this coming to the table as a Security Council resolution. The British rep can sit at his nice permanent seat and smile smugly as he slaps Argentina in the face with our Veto and chuckle softly as Russia and China add insult to injury with theirs.

The PM should offer a 99-year lease to Argentina if they can beat Britain in a rematch of 1982.

The spanking Argentina got the last time around obviously wasn't enough for them - I say bring it on (again) British troops are combat experienced now and they will absolutely SERVE the Argies even worse than the last time. So lets ave it!!!

just to point out that we beat them yes, but in the words of sir sandy woodward, it was a close run thing...i was there..i saw the aregentine pilots in falkland sound, and they were brave and very good..it was touch and go all the way...people like major chris keeble averted a slaughter at goose green because he was lucky..we are more battle hardened yes, but be under no illusion my friend, there is no glory in war or battle and anyone who has truly seen both will agree...you are a patriot and thats comendable, but please dont wish for war..
