First Mobile Euthanasia Unit To Be Launched In Holland

Mobile Euthanasia

The Huffington Post UK   First Posted: 10/02/2012 16:01 Updated: 10/02/2012 16:01

Plans for a mobile euthanasia team to assist people to die at home have been given the go-ahead in Holland, according to reports.

The mobile teams of doctors would be the first to carry out assisted suicides in borderline cases when family doctors refuse to administer patients with lethal drugs on ethical grounds.

"However, the doctors will have to comply with the same ‘due care criteria’ as ‘regular’ doctors," explains Rob Jonquière, MD, Communications Director for World Federation of Right to Die Societies.

The ‘due care criteria’ laid out in the Dutch Euthanasia Act (2002) hold that there should be a voluntary and well-considered request, the patient’s suffering should be unbearable and hopeless, the patient should be informed about their situation, there are no reasonable alternatives, an independent physician should be consulted, and the method should be medically and technically appropriate.

The Federation of Dutch Physicians expressed fears over patients who could be treated ending their lives unnecessarily, according to the Telegraph.

“In the worst cases, people could die who perhaps could have received some other help,” a spokesperson said.

Earlier this week the Archbishop of Canterbury warned that changes to the law to allow assisted suicide in the UK would spell “disaster” and a shift in societal attitudes towards the sanctity of life, it was reported by the Press Association.

He said: "We are committed as Christians to the belief that every life in every imaginable situation is infinitely precious in the sight of God.

"To say that there are certain conditions in which life is legally declared to be not worth living is a major shift in the moral and spiritual atmosphere in which we live.

"We can be realistic, we can be compassionate, in the application of the existing law."

Meanwhile, national campaign and lobby groups continue to fight for an assisted dying law in the UK. Dignity in Dying campaigns for an assisted dying law with upfront safeguards whereby terminally ill, mentally competent adults can choose an assisted death in their own homes or preferred place of care, if their suffering became unbearable for them.

Next month (March 2012), Parliament will debate the DPP’s guidelines on assisted suicide.

I don't know if this is good news or not. I think, if the law is complied with and it really is the patient's wish, then it's good that Holland are treating them with respect and allowing them to die at home, where they must be happier. We encourage this treatment for our pets, calling a vet to put them to sleep in their own home where they are happier and feel secure, so it seems a natural development to extend this to humans too.

Surely if euthanasia is such a horrid idea to "christians" who believe God should decide when to take us, then in the same vein of thought we should get no treatment at all because helping someone to stay alive when God has decided his time is up is also against the christian faith.

It's so vulnerable to abuse. Many safeguards needs to be in place first.

Who needs mobile units when we have germ infested hospitals and a care for the elderly system emulating the `killing fields`

Sad but true.

Phew ! it's in Holland, for a few seconds I thought that the Tories ' Nudge' department, had decided on a 'Quick Fix' to the housing shortage, by having a 'Ding Dong' 'Dr Death Calling', on elderly taking 'Too much Space' in their own homes !! I can relax....can't I ??

Lots of people get hot under the collar about many 'choices' in life...

We have the right to a peaceful life...
We have the right to bring as many children into the world, regardless of our suitability as parents,
We have the right to freedom of speech within the parameters of the law,
We have the right to practice whatever religion we choose,
We have the right to practice no religion whatsoever,

The list goes on, but I think you get my drift..?

Why, then, as we age or become infirm, don't we have an equal right to say 'enough is enough' and request euthanasia?

My point is one of consistency; we have & make choices all through our lives, then we should also be free to make an informed choice on when and how we die - before illness and infirmity take hold and removes all our dignity.

The right to die for everyone... those who object to euthanasia for whatever reason need not apply, but don't restrict my right to elect for a dignified death at a time of my choosing.

Totally agree, people should be allowed the right.

Why people should think they have a right to deny me a right to die with dignity is appalling, yet they want to push thier view on to me that I should die slowly and in pain.

Well said, hopefully it will come to this country and allow people to go with dignity.

I for 1 agree with the choice to be able to die when i feel i have had enough of the pain etc,i have seen many of my loved ones die with Cancer fighting for breath crying out with the pain when the morphine doesn't work for the said hrs even with a syringe driver ,and the worst is seeing someone that was full of life and very pretty go down to skin and bone looking like someone out of Belson unable to even sip water.Everyone should be able to CHOOSE.

The Archbishop of Canterbury needs to get living in the real world - sad but most of the population dont even know what christianity is now.............
And Im sure that it wont be long before someone claims that their "human rights" have been breached it not being allowed to chose when to die...............
08:10 AM on 02/11/2012
It should be your own choice, only you will know how much you are suffering, only you will know how much pain your family is going through and only you will know when you have had enough. It should be a choice that only you can make. Holland has my vote on this issue

How do we know that this doesn't make you suffer? Kinda like that injection to execute murderers was supposedly painful and cruel?

I mean, not like someone will live to tell about the new Euthanasia, unless it is some botched thing gone wrong.
07:47 AM on 02/11/2012
We can't be certain that the means of euthanasia is pain free but in the face of persistent unremitting pain through illness I would like the right to make that choice.

I have seen people suffering and been unable to do anything and have attended the ending of suffering for a number of pets through euthanasia. I know which I would prefer.

Oh, yeah. I think we should have the choice, but I'd be scared to try it if I was dying.

Since the drugs normally used for euthanasia are opioids, which are the same that is used for pain relief for severe pain/terminal patients pain control.

So unless the drugs we give the poor souls slowly wasting away are actually causing them pain, I can see no reason why when given a higher amount to let someone slip away it would cause any more pain?

No one knows until they get it, but like I said to someone else, hopefully it becomes a choice eventually.

Just to add, we have the right at present
to refuse treatment, and food, even in hospitals,
its not a nice way to go though.
I have seen it.

ITS about time we were given the same option,& the archbishop of Canterbury needs to BUTT out,who the hell does he think he is "GOD" IF I were in the position of needing these Dutch medics why should i not be allowed to! there are too many who "THINK" they know better, having seen several relatives & several friends die in what can only be discribed as disturbing circumstances,(even animals have a legal right to die with dignity) people MUST have the right to decide their end,its easy for someone to say no to the right but if they were in the pain or circumstance some of these people are or have been in OR even seen first hand their minds could easily be changed unless they are/ were so bigotted in their beliefs they would rather a person died in agony,GOOD on the DUTCH for showing compassion to those who need it !!
