Protesters have surrounded the Greek parliament in Athens, as MPs prepare to vote in favour of austerity measures designed to avoid a sovereign default and possible ejection from the euro.

Greece's prime minister Lukas Papademos is hoping to push though €3.3bn (£2.76bn) of public spending cuts viewed by eurozone nations such as Germany as necessary before they agree to further financing.

In a television address on Saturday he said that the the agreement would decide the country's future. "We are just a breath away from ground zero," he said.

The measures have proved deeply unpopular with many Greeks, and up to 40,000 demonstrators clashed with police as the midnight vote drew near.

Police have fired tear gas at the crowds while protesters have set fire to buildings and hurled petrol bombs and stones back at officers in the city's central Syntagma Square.

i can understand the anger after all the Prime Minister pushing this through was never elected. the Greek people have been given no say in the matter. also as they point out if the Germans had to repay the Billions they stole during the war it would cover most of the debt.

Does anyone know if these austerity cut backs are going to apply to the elected and beaurocrats??Seriously I havn't seen any mention of it applying to them.If not i'd be somewhat pi**ed off even though it won't make a blind bit of difference, they're screwed anyway !

I give a toss. Countries are being forced into bankruptcy because of bent politics and greed. I really hope the Greek people fight this all the way and return to their own currency.Yes they will have financial worries but at least they will have ditched the weight around their necks,Europe.
They can then, hopefully,go on to rebuild their own economy.

I agree!but only when the bankers who caused this mess taste humble aswell.£3 million a year in bonuses is not humble pie.

looks like another member of the "sheep" clan, that is until it has a drastic effect on their life, why dont they strip the assets off the greedy bankers and stop thousands coming into this country every week, its not as if they are coming in with lots of cash in their pockets, everyone has to be kept in a broken country with mass unemployment, that would save a few "Billions" as a start, like the tens of "Billions" spent over the last 14 years on millions who came in, Never ever here much about "immigration" now,its like a "word" that shouldnt be mentioned, SSSSSHHHHHH this wont last long, the Huffo Police will see to that,(slapped wrist).

Greece, ask to see where the money that was loaned to you came from? Ireland and Iceland did the same thing and we don't see them in the news anymore.

Did these lenders have the right to loan that money in the first place?

That's the the Greek people know where the money has gone.

People have a tendency to get upset when their government takes a dump on them.

Even if they were given the bail out money that they need `there is no way they can afford to repay it back. This is a bad deal these people are getting and the banks and government should be ashamed for what they have done. Yet its starting to happen here.

This is a complete travesty. No doubt the riot police will all be well paid and paid on time for this. My heart goes out to the people of Greece. Courage and strength against these financial terrorists!

Draconian austerity will not work, or be accepted, in Greece.
