Scottish Independence: BBC Caption Accidentally Breaks-Up United Kingdom

Does the BBC know something the rest of us don't? As the prime minister delivered his most high profile yet speech on the prospect of Scottish Independence, its news channel appeared to have already given up hope that the union could be saved.

The broadcaster accidentally suggested Cameron had told his audience in Edinburgh that the UK was a "previous thing".

As Radio 5 Live presenter Richard Bacon noted on Twitter:

Alex Salmond appears to have hijacked the writing of The News Channel's strap line summaries of David Cameron's speech:

Before anyone panics and starts stuffing their Union Flags into the recycling, we are 99% sure Cameron said "precious".

Let there be peace and there was peace. Let there be light and ... Love lost between to NATIONS is not something I call a "JOKE". Prime minister and First minister need TIMEOUT to reflect what the issues are, how they got to this "SILLY" and I mean "SILLY" stage of I want to leave the UNION, brother YOU CAN NOT LEAVE THE UNION. TIME have changed for the betterment of the UNION. The should be talking of sorting out their differences i.e no more differentiation between ENGLAND, SCOTLAND ETC.

if this was true then scotland would lose free perscriptions , free hopital parking and suvivial from lack of englands financial support. it could mean disaster as in greece for scotland and i hope that doesn't happen. scotland is a gret country but like many has too higher unemployment than other areas.

Oh Good - if the BBC has broken up Britain and given Scotland it's Independence I won't have to pay for a TV Licence then.

The BBC dont do anything accidentally, if they made the comment I believe they made it deliberatrly. They will again be following their own agenda. Neither does the BBC any longer serve the people who pay their wages, it should become commercial, although it does produce the best period dramas.

Government should axe the BBC. Its old fashioned and many see it as another form of taxation.

Why should I be forced to pay £145 a year for a service that I do not use?! I never watch any BBC TV programmes or do I listen to BBC radio. Make the service totally free to air and then they will have t resort to advertising to fund themselves.

I do watch BBC programmes, but I had no idea it was £145 for the TV licence now. Since it's paid by direct debit I suspect I'm not alone in not noticing how much it's gone up. It's a luxury we can do without, so I agree with you - let them fund it through advertising. Sure, the BBC makes programmes - but if they're worth watching they should make profits through selling them to other channels and overseas. If only a small minority want to watch them, then let the small minority pay for them through donation or voluntary subscription.

The BBC has huge overheads, so I'm not so sure if donations would be enough. But £145 is about £12 per month. I only pay £21 for satellite TV and I subscribe to lots of channels.

If ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 etc can survive without licensing, then surely the BBC can do it. At the same time it would force the BBC to provide quality entertainment, because if nobody watches the programmes, then nobody will pay for advertisements, then this obviously means no ££'s for the BBC.

50p a week is more than 145

Hmmm..... Sorry I don't see your point. Fifty pence per week adds up to £26 in a year, but I still don't see your point.

Oh, democracy! Two leaders, neither of whom I voted for: one in overall charge but with no political foot to speak of in one part of the country, the leader of which behaves as though the independence he (but how many of his fellow-countrymen?) yearns for on political grounds has already happened, and he can tell the leader in overall charge (but little influence in his part of the country) how, not only what 'his' people want, but what the larger population are gong to get, like it or not. They're both misguided to a great extent. But they've been elected. Just about.

Did you never watch Yes Minister or Yes Prime Minister, it is the backroom boys that run the country, the politicians merely think they do.

I would take Salmond to lose his seat in the next election... he should take his monster raving loony party to the Shetlands, maybe just maybe he will do some good there.

The BBC typo'd (as usual, I count at least 5 a day on their straplines) but the funniest thing about this story is AOL poking fun at the Beeb, while yesterday they had a rather epic typo on 1 of their hyperlinks in the Cheryl Cole story. At least the BBC's letters were adjacent and probably no more than the slip of a finger on a keyboard - AOL managed to add a mysterious S to the word HITS ... pot, kettle = laughing at you both.

Pity the BBC can't be broken up & sold off to save us taxpayers a fortune.
09:09 PM on 02/16/2012
The utility companies were sold off and most now seem to be owned by French companies and via them, the French government and all our money goes to the frnch, along with all the £B ripped off by the EU.

Scottish water is still owned by the people of Scotland.

...Although I'm sure that is equivalent to saying man did not land on the moon in 1969, which is stupid. I have always been certain man landed on the moon. Basically I'm not big on conspiracy theories. I just do not trust the BBC!

The media rules the world, perhaps the BBC has decided to break up the UK. Maybe they are using semi subliminal messages, to plant the seeds, of the break up of the union!
