NHS Reforms: Tim Farron Says The Bill Should Have Been Dropped

Tim Farron Made The Comments On ITV Granada's Party People Programme

Further coalition tensions have emerged over the Government's troubled health reforms after Liberal Democrat president Tim Farron said the legislation should have been dropped.

Farron said the legislation to implement Health Secretary Andrew Lansley's reforms should have been scrapped or "massively changed" at an earlier stage before it progressed this far and it would be "stupid" to ignore medics' concerns over the proposals.

He demanded that all elements of new competition in the NHS should be stripped from the bill in order for Lib Dems to support it.

Lib Dem peers have tabled a number of amendments to the Health and Social Care Bill, which resumes its difficult passage through Parliament next week in the Lords.

This week has seen an NHS summit at Number 10, criticised by Labour and health professionals for Downing Street's decision not to invite Royal Colleges opposed to the Bill.

Andrew Lansley was heckled in Whitehall by protesters, including a woman who described the health secretary's reforms as "Codswallop".

Speaking on ITV Granada's Party People programme, Mr Farron, said: "Lots of us are guilty for allowing it to get as far as it has done now.

"Basically this should have been dealt with far earlier in the cycle."

Asked whether that meant it should have been dropped, he said: "Dropped, massively changed."

Pressed on what should happen now, Farron focused on part three of the legislation and said: "Take out all the new competition in the bill. If that was to happen then the bill may as well proceed because then it becomes about democratising and tidying up the mess that was left behind by Labour."

Farron added: "What I want is for the Lords to introduce changes that will remove the new competition elements from the bill and I would like the Government to give way on those things. It's all to play for."

His comments came after the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPH) called for the Health Bill to be withdrawn just days after attending a Downing Street summit with David Cameron.

Its president, Professor Terence Stephenson, said the RCPH never supported the bill but it was now clear a substantial majority of voting members believe it "carries risk for children and young people".

He said there was also "deep concern" among the wider health profession and public over the impact of the bill on patient care.

Farron said it would be "absolutely stupid for anybody to ignore what is being said" by health professionals.

The Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "We have said we will continue to listen as this bill proceeds through the Lords, but we had a listening exercise last year and as a result many significant changes were made to that bill.

"We think the reforms are the right ones. It is going to be an ongoing process explaining to people these reforms and, in particular as we implement these reforms, showing how they are working to the benefit of patients."

People with a vested interest in things staying the same wax lyrical about the NHS: They try to give the impression that Florence Nightingale still patrols the wards with a candle at night, but you only have to read a newspaper or turn on your TV to get the truth. Compensation claims are on a permanent upward trend due to botched operations, surgical instruments being left inside patients etc. Hush money paid out by managers to shut up whistle blowers is also on an indentical trend.

No, I don't vote for any political party.

we should have a general election and the LibDems should stand against the bill and the Tories should produce the Bill they really want not some cobbled together hash up designed to placate the Libs

there was none of this in either manifesto and there is no political mandate for these changes so Mr Cameron do these decent and democratic thing and call an election and let us the Great British Public have our say on your plans.

Here's a tip: include in your manifesto a guaranteed Referendum on the question "should the UK leave the European Union?" and you will win and therefore be able to get your abor.tion of a Bill through Parliament

But none of this will happen, we are slaves, our voices and opinions don't count

Yet another inoffensive post deleted. It's difficult to follow the rules when you don't know what they are. It's even harder when they change without notice, and you still have no idea what they are. It would help if HP could publish them.

This bill is the first phase of privatising the NHS, Which is what Cameron wants. Obama told Cameron it is no good but he doesn't care as all his cronies can afford private Insurance unlike most of us workers and pensioners. We have paid into the NHS for 50 years just what for I would like to know

The Libdems are done for in more ways than one. After the next election they may not, hopeffully, exist at all. Trees, plants and useless Uni directors will have to find other sponsors.

The libdums are not working for the public, they are just looking after themselves to be the tories lapdogs to be wheeled out when their is bad news, the only supporter of this bill in the libdums is Clegg & why should we listen to him he has lied his way into power he has made so many u-turns on policy its a wonder he not continually throwing up.
I note that one of the favourites invited to downing street has now come out against the bill, call me dave power of persuasion is failing.
02:22 PM on 02/25/2012
its not only the libdums, its the CON-serves,& the labour who are just looking out for them selves, show me one "HONEST" MP & i will show you a dozen of the lieing, cheating, frauding, self serving, gits, unless we get these idiots out of power our whole infistructure is at risk, this country now requires a complete overhaul of its political scene,as it has become over the las 25 years a bed of fraud, theft,& total incompitance, simply due to them ensuring its THEIR requirements that are supported, everyone elses is secondary,& basically irrelevent! WE now need an election & URGENTLY!! & to get people that really care not only for the country but is population & its welfare !! which non of the recent & present AXXHOLES give a damm about !!

NHS reforms, not required or desired; public workers pensions, not required or desired; child benefit cuts, not required or desired. Massive taxation on the bankers to repay the loans, very required and desired.

Also a referendum on Europe, together with a general election very necessary, and desired. Unfortunately our political masters do not agree. so no chance.

As usual its' the ordinary people who have to pay the price for the Tory Bankers' folly'..But they are also using this an excuse to take more and more rights from us.Democracy' is a word the Tories don't recognize. You would have thought people would have learned from the last disaterous Tory administration way back in the eighties' and more than half of the ninties'?...It seems that these people responsible for electing with rabble would know better?...Sadly' NO'..Have they got short memories or something?

"The Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "We have said we will continue to listen as this bill proceeds through the Lords, but we had a listening exercise last year and as a result many significant changes were made to that bill".

1.They claim they listened... not to the public they didn't.
1.Why are PM's spokesmen never named?

Time for the Libs to do the right thing here.

Spend a few major bucks to have the lib dems come pay USA for a visit and check out what for profit medicine has made this country. Ah they will be running back home to dump those plans so fast it will make make warp speed to the trash can.
