Boris Johnson: Ken Livingstone Is A 'Barefaced Liar'

Posted: 3/04/2012 11:30 Updated: 3/04/2012 12:39

Boris Johnson accused Ken Livingstone of being a "f*****g liar" as a furious row over the mayoral candidates tax arrangements spilled off air following a radio debate.

Speaking during on London radio station LBC on Tuesday morning, Livingstone defended himself against "smears" that he avoided paying his fair share of tax.

The Labour candidate and former mayor has been accused of deliberately funneling some of his earnings into a company in order to, legally, pay corporation tax of 20% rather than income rate of 50%.

In a bad tempered exchange he accused Johnson of having had a similar arrangement in the past through a company called "Finland Station".

However Johnson denied the charge, insisting that he had never used a company to minimise the amount of income tax he paid.

"I pay income tax, I'm proud of it, it's pretty disgraceful to be attacked by Ken Livingstone, someone who set up a dodging maneuver then denounced everybody else who did so," he said.

Johnson said the company was a television production company that he was "briefly a director of" before he came mayor. "The guy's a liar," Johnson muttered as Ken continued his attack, "a barefaced liar".

The fight reportedly continued into the lift at the radio station as Livingstone, Johnson and the Lib Dem candidate Brian Paddick and the Green candidate Jenny Jones left the studio.

Johnson and Livingstone are involved in a furious row in the lift after the LBC broadcast.

According to The Guardian Johnson confronted Livingstone over his accusations, saying to him: "You're a f*****g liar, you're a f*****g liar, you're a f*****g liar."

In a statement published following the debate, Johnson said: "No income earned by me has ever been paid to a "service" company, through which a person or person's freelance earnings can be channelled so that they pay corporation rather than income tax.

"To suggest otherwise is a complete and utter fabrication.

He added: "Of course the real point is not about my tax arrangements. It is about the hypocrisy of a man who for years has railed against those who use special arrangements to reduce their tax and who has then been caught – bang to rights – doing the very same thing himself."

Following today's debate, a spokesperson for Livingstone said: "Boris Johnson lost his temper because he lost the debate - he talked about cable cars not cutting fares and the squeeze on Londoners."

Londonistan on its way no matter which of the main three you pick.

Except the rich pockets of course. They'll always be gated to the wonders of multiculturalism. The rich and powerful don't need "enrichment" of course.

Whether you think Boris & Ken are or that they are not, you are absolutely right.

In addition to how he handled money people should look at the source of some of it. Ken was paid handsomely (just like George Galloway) by Press TV. They are owned by the Iranian government. This fits with their sectarian politics and their courting of Islamic extremists very well it seems to me. Boris is better than Ken but he doesn't choose to live off a salary of 140,000 for being Mayor. He has a lucrative contract with the public. I would like to see the candidates for Mayor promise to just do that job. Isn't 140 grand enough?

Uh Oh Boris, you could be in trouble here - telling the truth about Ken Livingstoned.
Don't you know that we don't like politicians who tell us the truth?

I have been lost for words since Boris was elected. I havent spoken for years in fact. He is someone that I labelled unelectactable as I did John Major, Gordan Brown, Ian Duncan Smith and William Hague. I still cant for the life of me work out how I was proved wrong in Boris`s case. In fact out of the lot of them I would still say Boris is the worst.

Can anyone tell me why they would want Boris in charge of a local Park let alone Mayor of London?

Seriously though everytime I see Boris on TV I wait to hear something that explains why he is Mayor of London. Who votes for Mayor of London?

I once saw him on "Have I got news for you" long before he was Mayor and I thought "how is this guy an elected Politician". He was an absolute joke and he doesnt appear to have changed.

One question has been bugging me for years: what do mayors actually do? Aside from attending all those photo opportunities, that is.

They receive an outrageously high compensation.

I remember watching Cameron and Johnson acting in the same manner at the Oxford Union. They were both revolting then, and nothing has changed since.

there are a number of ways Ken could of structure his tax affairs, he naturally chose the one which meant he paid the lowest amount of tax. Not sure about those expenses he charged against the business, that will come back to haunt him.

Text book tax planning.
