Trust In David Cameron And George Osborne Hits New Low

David Cameron George Osborne
Voters have lost faith in David Cameron and George Osborne

Public trust in David Cameron and George Osborne's handling of the economy has slumped to a new low in the wake of a series of controversies over measures in last month's Budget.

The survey, by ComRes for ITV News, showed a clear majority (53%) do not now have faith in the prime minister's ability to steer the UK through turbulent economic times.

That is a six-point jump on last month and the proportion expressing confidence slumped five points to 31% - putting the gap between the two at 22 points, equalling his worst-ever score, the Press Association reported.

After rows over the "granny tax" reduction in OAPs' tax allowances, VAT on pasties, the impact of tax credit cuts on families and the scrapping of the 50p top rate of income tax, the chancellor fares worse still.

As many as 60% do not trust him with the nation's purse strings (up eight points on last month) while those expressing confidence stood at only around one in five (21%), down from 25%.

That net score of -39 for Mr Osborne is much worse than his previous low of -30, in July last year.

The Conservative pair may draw comfort, however, from the apparent failure of Labour's team of Ed Miliband and Ed Balls to seize the initiative - with both still trailing their coalition counterparts.

The Opposition leader's approval rating rose just two points to 18% while the shadow chancellor was stalled at 15%.

ComRes interviewed 2,028 adults online between 30 March and 1 April.

The survey results came on the same day that the prime minister dismissed claims that families with children will lose £511 a year on average under new tax and benefit changes - insisting the Tories were the party of "the strivers, the grafters, the family raisers".

Cameron said he did not accept the figures produced by a respected think-tank which sparked warnings from anti-poverty campaigners that the start of Easter weekend would be "Bad Friday" for a million or more households.

And he took to the local election trail promising a "flat-out, full-throttle fight

"What we're doing today has laid the foundations for a sounder, stronger economy."

He went on: "We need a flat-out, full-throttle fight.

"That's what we need to tell people: that this is a government that's looking at the horizon, not at the headlines, that cares about working for the long-term good, not short-term popularity, that works in the national interest, not the party interest."

Amid signs Labour is not capitalising on the difficulties, including its shock defeat to Respect's George Galloway in the Bradford West by-election, Cameron launched a withering attack on the Labour-run Welsh government.

It was presiding over "a complete and utter shambles" in the NHS and letting pupils fall behind English colleagues by "clinging on to old, failed, stale ideologies" in education, he said.

"While all this is happening, Welsh children slip further and further behind in the international rankings," he said.

"Against other developed countries they come 30th for science, 38th for reading, 40th for maths - below average across the board - unlike any of the other nations in the UK.

"You'd think this called for some real soul-searching, some real ambition, but you know what the Welsh education minister said? That he didn't expect any "real improvement" by the next rankings - a whole three years later.

"This is nothing less than a national scandal.

"It might be the political culture in Wales just to go along with the status quo and not rock the boat but we've got to be bolder than that."

Welsh Labour described the PM's comments as "offensive smears".

Torfaen Assembly Member Lynne Neagle said: "Unlike the Tories in England, Welsh Labour in government has worked with the teaching professions to implement successful change.

"That's why we don't have league tables. That's why we've abolished SATs, introduced the Foundation Phase and created a skill-based curriculum.

"We oppose the Tory obsession for a model of education that's driven by antagonism and competition. It's why we've rejected academies and so-called free schools.

"Welsh Labour has maintained faith in the comprehensive model of education because it delivers for all our children.

"That's what the people of Wales voted for in the Assembly elections last May. We have a mandate from the people for our policies - David Cameron doesn't."

Well, we have the local elections coming up (3rd May), so lets start voting with our feet. I haven't voted for the last 2 elections (yes, shame on me) because the result was always a fore-gone conclusion, one of the usual 3 suspects would get in. This time, UKIP - we have a candidate here - providing there's a box to tick for him at the poling booth and there hasn't been a mis-print and left him off lol!
The local elections are a time for us to start wising up on all the parties, to see if they keep their promises, do the same again each year until the GE then decide who to vote for. Ignore the hype and false promises they'll all come up with before the GE, start checking 'em out now!

the only thing you can trust these two to do is to do what their ideology tells them which is fine for the wealthy

however if you are poor, sick, disabled, a pensioner, a public sector worker, a carer, a family with children working less than 24 hours, a young person, unemployed or a student then you can expect your living standards and those of your family and children to be drastically worsened

The good news is reserved for those earning over £150,000 pa

I would rather have Labour back any day of the week - at least when they have got in, they have been voted in, not like this mishmash party - they need to be driven out as soon as possible!

If they had kept their promise over a few things ,people would have faith in them .They have ignored most peoples wish to vote on Europe, should we continue to pay for bankrupt countries, should money still be given to countries that hate us,should we remain in Iraq and Afghanistan, reduction of immigration ,Tereasa May to confirm terrorists will not remain in the UK.That is just a few items ,yet they have failed on every one.I will be voting for a party that has our interests first

We can all crow huff and puff about the two main parties and it doesn't make any differance who got us into this mess, over the past twenty years we have chopped and changed between the two, avery time there is a general election the two main parties have said what they are going to do for the country and when they are elected the do just the opposit, what is more annoying about the tories is that they are too fond of giving tax payers money away to so called countries who are in need, yet it goes to keep their leaders in a life of luxury while thier people still starve, and prop up the EU with a 45 million pound gift every week,in the past we have never given any other party a chance its allways been the two main parties and every time they get in office they do the same old trick, the ignore what is good for the people and their needs, instead its big corporations and the banks that benifit every time, how are we going to know what any other party can do if we dont give them a chance, because its as plain as the nose on your face that the two main parties couldn't care less.

This Govt has made, and continues to make, mistakes in many of its decisions. That is the opinion of many of us. I am however pragmatic enough to recognise any Govt would be unpopular, not matter what it did, in trying to extricate us from the fiscal abyss we find ourselves in. I can't however, subscribe to the bandwagon of boo boys (and girls) slating the Tories off for being ex public school, wealthy in their own rights, from titled or monied backgrounds et al. Most of those circumstances are accidents of birth and do not make them any less able to govern than socialists or ex council estate MPs . Look, and I mean really look, into the circumstances of many of these so called socialists. Look where their children go to school, their outside earnings and affiliations, their properties, their investments. look where many of them were educated, their private health insurances, their accountants who file their tax returns. We need to stop this insane jealousy and hateful vitriol and judge people on their performance not their heritage and backgrounds.. I would rather have an erudite wealthy, ex public school person leading the country than a thick "man of the people". I know there aren't many erudite, wealthy ex public school persons in parliament at present but my point remains valid. I am no adherent of this Govt at all but this carping about "them and us" is futile. And I am certainly not one of "them".

Don't worry the Tories will always find someone to blame other than themselves. They're not called the Nasty Party for nothing. But when they've finished experimenting with our kids they'll create another lost generation to replace the ones they created before.
