Dummy Candidate: Renee Slater Arrested After Entering Mannequin Helena Torry In Election

Posted: 20/04/2012 16:23 Updated: 20/04/2012 16:23   PA

A woman has been arrested after a mannequin was entered as a candidate for the upcoming council elections.

The dummy, named Helena Torry, was entered in the Hazlehead, Ashley and Queens Cross ward in Aberdeen.

Its election "agent" Renee Slater was charged by Grampian Police yesterday under the Representation of the People Act.

A force spokeswoman said: "Grampian Police can confirm that a 63-year-old female was charged in connection with an offence under the Representation of the People Act 1983 on Thursday April 19. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal in due course.

"As the matter is now the subject of active proceedings, Grampian Police can make no further comment."

On April 2, Aberdeen City Council published a revised Notice of Poll for the ward, ahead of the election which is due to take place on May 3.

Returning Officer Valerie Watts said: "It has been brought to my attention that Helena Torry, for whom a nomination paper was submitted for the Hazlehead, Ashley and Queens Cross ward, does not exist.

"I am, therefore, republishing the Notice of Poll for that ward, deleting the reference to the fake candidate.

"This is a very serious and unusual step to take but is necessary to ensure that the interests of the genuine candidates and voters are protected, and that the election can take place on May 3.

"The nomination paper for Helena Torry was submitted shortly before the close of nominations on March 3 and contained all the information required by statute for a valid nomination.

"In this case, it is clear from public statements from the purported election agent that the information on the form was inaccurate to the point of rendering the nomination a complete nullity, which can be disregarded for the purposes of the election."

She added that "those concerned" would be billed for all costs involved in dealing with the matter.

Ms Slater told STV News: "This is not a police issue.

"This is an Aberdeen City Council issue. I think the police have much more important things to deal with than me."

What a pity Aberdeen City councillors saw fit to waste valuable police resources persecuting the only good thing to happen in politics for a long time.

British humour is alive and well, pity some people cant see the funny side of it, I think its very clever. Now if the lady had used a black mannequin that would really have stirred things up !!.

The police treated me with utter respect and kindness.. This an issue created by Aberdeen City Council.. They are the ones who pressed the police into making an arrest and the law had to be enforced, whether the police wanted to or not. I got tse distinct impression they'd rather be catching muggers than dealing with my trivia.. Helena Torry is quite tight lipped while in custody.. I advised her to keep shtum & not say nothing. There was serious message here too.. She's candidate for the Silent Majority. Youth work, centres for people with learning and mobility problems are closing.. These are the issues that Helen is campaigning about, people with no voice

It is worth also pointing out that my community A largely poor area & similar places will have to fundraise to keep their commuity centres open. This is fine if you live in a fairly affluent area. This is why there was universal funding on community work - that all sections of the community would get a fair share of the cake... Some section of community will be left with only crumbs.Adult Learning has all but disappeared leaving a shivering skeleton of it's former self.. 2p on the council tax could have saved all these important services.. The Scottish Government decided they wouldn't ring-fence funding for these important services any further. This allowed councils to drop support and spend resources on for instance supporting rich people's fantasies. #FreeHelenaTorry

Of course the woman should be arrested, fancy trying to get a dummy elected to public office. This would be a massive retrograde step, - for the dummy. as well as being a gross insult to the dummies intelligence quotient. How dare she?

I would vote for her. How can she be any worse than the ones we have now?

Brilliant- how ridiculous and petty to prosecute her doing what a lot of people think,
I notice standing up for the common people right to land is palpably more convincing than our 'fake' Trust fund millionaire predominance than all the party political leaderships!

Bet the shop dummy actually met more real people as well!

Should there be a mannequin test applied to all MPs then? ..... Would any of the present shower pass the test? ..... Which designer house built Cameron? ... Can Miliband use the test to prove he's a real person? ....

Further to my previous comments, can we expect to see the Attorney General going to the High Court for an injunction for Breach of Copyright - as surely "Dummy" and "Dummies" are trademarks registered to and owned & used by this present government?

if we had voted for the dummy we might have got treated like we should, because the government treat us like dummies

The voters in Richmondshire DID vote for a dummy - they got William Hague !

The main objection came from the Labour Party Office as the dummy appeared to have more leadership qualities than Ed Milliband

ladybird ow do you know? You are always posting anti labour comments and most of your rhetoric is based on non facts. Are you some kind of rabid right winger?

This is even better than the "none of the above" protest vote. Everyone vote for a dummy in the next election. Oh, forget it, how would we tell the dummies apart ? On a serious note, the powers that be are getting well above their station with their utter disregard for the electorate. Political freedom is being eroded by the ever worried establishment in their desperate attempt to cling onto power. The three main parties only interest in politics are holding power and advancing their own careers and wealth accumulation.

I have had to come back...this has given me the lift of today...what a laugh I have enjoyed reading all the comments...thank you...but this women who has been arrested well all I can say if this was for the 'Representation of people act'....what about the thousands who voted our ministers in?...why are they not arrested?...the people who they voted in have sadly failed and misrepresented the people of the UK???...she should be discharged...and given a medal and compensation for wrongful arrest and for bringing this matter to light...I think there should be full backing given to this lady...I support her...she has only made a statement of how disgruntled she is with what is happening...is she not allowed to do this?...does it not come under her human rights... cos I bet if she had come from another country a few years ago she would have not have even been arrested...

Well it is a slap in the face for all those police detracters who complain the police don't act quick enough when a very serious crime has been committed. She had to be taken off the streets to protect public safety, we can't just have wild 63 year old lady's running amok in our cities inciting dummies to stand in council elections, what sort of anarchial message would that send out! Pathetic overreaction by the police. Go out and stop some real crime happening and get a sense of humour and perspective on life while you are doing so.
