Coalition Has A 'Catastrophic Lack Of Coherence', MPs Warn

Posted: 24/04/2012 00:57 Updated: 25/04/2012 18:36

The lack of a coherent approach to policy making in the coalition could lead to "catastrophic consequences" for the country, according to a committee of MPs.

In a damning report published on Tuesday, the public administration committee said it had "little confidence that government policies are informed by a clear, coherent strategic approach".

"Policy decisions are made for short-term reasons, little reflecting the longer-term interests of the nation," the MPs said.

The committee said this had led to a series of high profiles mistakes including the negative reaction to George Osborne's Budget.

Labour has slammed the Budget as an "omnishambles" following criticism of the so-called "pasty tax" and "granny tax" as well as the decision to scrap the 50p top rate of tax.

The committee warned that the "absence of strategic leadership or weak leadership" will result in a vicious circle in which "bad policy and failure in outcomes undermine the values and aspirations of the public and faith in their leaders".

Bernard Jenkin, the Tory chair of the committee, said there was no doubt that the government was presented with very severe economic and political challenges but that was not an excuse for poor planning.

"The government presented us with six strategic aims, such as 'a free and democratic society', but these are so general as to be meaningless," he said.

“The complex, diverse and unpredictable domestic and global challenges facing the UK mean that strategic thinking is both increasingly difficult to sustain, and yet it is more vital to do so.

"Failing to do so in the long term undermines national self-confidence and in the short term could have catastrophic consequences."

The report could not come at a worse time for the government, suffering as it is from a series of public relations disasters including the perception that it is lurching from crisis to crisis without direction.

A largely self made fuel panic as well as the awkward revelation for the Conservative Party that one of its officials was promising policy influence in exchange for donations has provided ammunition for critics.

The criticism that the government is too short term in its thinking will be particularly stinging given pledges by David Cameron and Nick Clegg to engage in a "horizon shift" when they came to power in order to think long term.

"Our horizons have shortened as the timescales of our problems have lengthened," Clegg said in September 2010. He called for a "fundamental alteration in the timelines of our decision-making".

Michael Dugher, Labour’s Shadow Cabinet Office Minister, said:

"Incompetence and unfairness are the defining characteristics for this Government."

"At the last election, David Cameron promised he would change Britain for the better and that we would all be in this together. He has failed on both counts."

"He should get a grip of his out of touch Government, change course and stop making hard-pressed pensioners and families pay the price for his incompetence."

Support for Labour has reached its highest level for nine years according to a poll published on Monday evening, as backing for the Conservatives slumped dramatically.

Ed Miliband's party has seen its poll rating rise by four points in the past month to 41%, a figure last enjoyed by Labour during Iain Duncan Smith's ill-fated leadership of the Tories, Monday's ICM survey for the Guardian found.

It's starting to look as if the cracks are beginning to show in the coalition as a whole, and the liberal and conservative parties separately. It's my hope that the local MP's from both parties are beginning to realize just how much damage Cameron and Clegg are doing to their own parties and putting in jeopardy their MP's hopes of re-election.

Fingers crossed X I'm right..

Behind the public school polish and confidence - there is actually a complete lack of worldly awareness.
They also don't actually deliver...
If Cameron had been appointed as a MD of a commercial organisation - he would have been sacked long ago.
As it is he will probably hang on till 2015...

Actually, behind the public school polish and confidence - they really don't give a sh*t.

And the only people who get sacked for poor job performance in any organisation are the people below the MD. Since most MDs don't do any real work, but rely on underlings to produce it on their behalf, nothing that goes wrong can possibly be the MD's fault.

''As it is he will probably hang on till 2015...''

More's the pity for us tax payers. Contrary to what you say; I hope he hangs in 2015, if not sooner given what he is about to face in PM's questions later. Michael Dugher has hit the nail on the head with his remarks re unfairness etc.

We need a coalition government. Just not one that includes labour, liberals or conservatives. These 3 are all so similar there is nothing to choose between them. They all ignore the wishes of the people, lie through their teeth and have stolen our democracy by making it nearly impossible for anyone except one of them to be elected.. Get them out. Vote for new parties or independents only or None of the above. there will be confusion for a while but we'll soon have a second election and boy will they have changed their tune by then.

Replace Cameron with David Davis the son of a single parent and brought up in a council house on a counsil estate, a self made man
Introduce positive leadershipa and centrer right policies tell the Liberals to join in to speak with one voice or else, with thought through policies, and see the opinion polls swing in the Conservstive parties favour
OR.
Call another General electioin , let labour win and see the mess that they will get us into for there are few if any solutions to the current deficit except higer taxes, the lowering of government spending, with a cut in social services and and benfits, and Labour will not do that, and just borrow more until we are bankrupted.
09:56 PM on 04/24/2012
the damage is done and people will no doubt vote with the re hearts and cut there nose of to spite there face

The committee is 100% wrong, the coalition have absolutley no cohesion, they are as much use as a chocolate fireguard, I have never been as dissapointed in anyone as I am with David Cameron. He has let his party down, he has let the people down but more importantly he has let himself down and show he has no integrity and like Tony Blair and Gordon Brown cannot be trusted with our futures. Hoy Balls and Miliband this means you too.

Totally agree. What's lacking among the political parties is any semblance of honesty and integrity. The public have been repeatedly and blatantly lied to. The next election may create another coalition simply because our politicians fail to generate the trust that their positions of responsibility demand.

There was far more integrity and honesty when Harold Wilson, Ted Heath, James Callaghan etc were at the respective helms.

I don't like extremists and would never vote BNP but all the main parties are so similar, so inept, so greedy, ignore public opinion, lie through their teeth and the rest. It's easy to understand why people are tempted. What else can they do when they know Lab/Lib/Torys will all fail to represent them honestly.. What I will do is vote for any reasonable new partry, even UKIP, for an independent or mark my paper "None of the above". Perhaps this way they will get the message.
