Former News International legal manager Tom Crone has described allegations from Rupert Murdoch that he helped orchestrate a cover-up of phone hacking as a "shameful lie."

In a statement released on Thursday, Crone said Murdoch's evidence could "only apply to me": "His assertion that I took charge of a cover-up in relation to phone hacking is a shameful lie."

Murdoch said earlier senior executives were not informed, or misinformed, and "shielded" from what was going on.

"I blame one or two people for that, who perhaps I shouldn't name because for all I know they may be arrested yet," he said.

"The person I am thinking of was a friend of the journalists, drinking pal, and was a clever lawyer and forbade them to go and see the evidence, or there have been statements reporting that this person forbade people to go and report to Mrs Brooks or James (Murdoch).

"That is not to excuse it on our behalf at all, I take it extremely seriously that that situation had arisen," he said.

The news comes as Ofcom escalates its investigation into whether BSkyB remains a "fit and proper" owner of a broadcasting licence.

Tom Crone's full statement:

“Since Rupert Murdoch’s evidence today about a lawyer who had been on the News of the World for many years can only refer to me, I am issuing the following statement.

“His assertion that I “took charge of a cover-up” in relation to phone-hacking is a shameful lie. The same applies to his assertions that I misinformed senior executives about what was going on and that I forbade people from reporting to Rebekah Brooks or to James Murdoch.

“It is perhaps no coincidence that the two people he has identified in relation to his cover-up allegations are the same two people who pointed out that his son’s evidence to the Parliamentary Select Committee last year was inaccurate.

“The fact that Mr Murdoch’s attack on Colin Myler and myself may have been personal as well as being wholly wrong greatly demeans him.”

I suppose the only reason this all started to unravel was when attention was brought to that little girl, Millie Dowler, when the accusations were made about her 'phone being hacked, which gave her family false hopes she was still alive.

The trauma that her family were put through must have been dreadful.

Look at the News of the World. The depth of sleaze that newspaper stooped to is unbelievable. There was not even an element of any morals or ethics in the way the family Murdoch either looked after their employees, their media - or the methods they used to extract information. Obviously not all the journalists were sleaze ridden - but many were living in fear and constant worry over losing their jobs.

Thank God that eyes are turned now to the rest of his empire, including BSkyB and the whole of News Corporation.

Murdoch virtually denied everything or couldn't remember... until a question was asked that could do no damage, then suddenly his memory was good.

If Murdoch "knew nothing" then he's a bad boss.

My experience as a former lawyer is that when lawyers did things which were dishonest (as Mr Murdoch alleges) then the bosses knew and in every case created a culture or sanctioned such a thing. I have an array of cases in mind, especially Leicester City Council

Of course I am sure that News International bosses would never be involved in such behaviour, would they?

And if illegal activities were taking place Mr Crone as a lawyer is an Officer of the Court and had a legal professional duty to report unlawful behaviour to the police .

So either Mr Crone knew of these illegal activities and failed to act or he didn't know - and if he on the spot didn't know what was going on under his nose how would Mr Murdock based in the USA know .

Mr Crone certainly knew of large amounts of damages being paid to phone hacking victims as he himself said both to the Parliamentary Committee hearings and to the Leveson Inquiry - he authorised the payments

I suspect ejc you think the NotW stood for all that was great & good about our wonderful country.....
To continue the irony: Of course, I could be wrong.......
I hope I do not need to emphasise the word irony....
I am being ironic, added for the hard of understganding, which seem to abound here...

I find it very difficult to believe that the Murdocks did not know what was going on at The News of the World or at any other paper they are involved in .They have not become what they are by stepping back and letting other people run the complete show. As far as James Murdock is concerned I personally wouldn't trust him with running a news stand let alone a media empire and I cannot understand how they are both not under arrest.

Steevo--you are EXACTLY right! Murdoch & his nauseating cronies & empire have for far too long given a huge big black eye to serious jounalists & dedicated press people everywhere--many of whom do an honest, & fair days work to enlighten & inform the public. Toadying money-grubbing politicians are about where most of them deserve to be in terms of public opinion--but too many in the media are unfairly tarred & feathered with the same brush that is aptly applied to them & to those who have carried & still do carry the flag of the tainted pirate Murdoch-gang.

Just hope you and Mylers are recalled by Leveson so you can introduce and discuss your smoking gun memos and meetings with James and Becky so as to hang them out to dry.
04:34 AM on 04/27/2012
Their memos about James Murdoch and the handling of the Taylor case were sent to and published by the Parliament committee investigating the matter since many months now and nothing happened which I find weird because those memos suggest that all 3 men may have had some knowledge about what was going on. Also, isn't all this potentially prejudicial about any future trial concerning the Taylor case handling? It always strikes me why all this information about this specific case keeps to come out .
04:31 PM on 04/27/2012
The memo's first came out in MP Select Committee hearings.Admin hearings like Select Committee are just information like meetings; no Rule of Law no possible criminal violations for lying. When James and Rupert cast aspersions on Crone and Mylers in the Leveson Judicial hearings that started the ball rolling. They have essentially accused Crone and Mylers of any and all criminal acts at and by NoTW. They claim themselves, Coulson and Becky didn't know anything about the coverup and are implying that if anyone is to be indicted it should be Crone and Mylers. This is what the legal world has been waiting for : criminal accusations in a legal judicial setting. Crone and Mylers will now unload proof that they did their duty, and the memos show that, and informed all parties of the huge hacking going on Crone has already accused Rupert of lying. The memos and live rebuttal testimony by Crone and Mylers will make Rupert, Becky and James toast.

BSkyB: Not fit, under any circumstances. All dictatorships & empires come to an end eventually. Hopefully this will be a further example! These Murdochs are quite clearly liars and as corrupt as the dictionary definition of the word. And they surround themselves with equally unpleasant trough feeders.

The horse Risa Cameron didn't ride , may have rode, probably rode, did ride was a trough feeder but no guilt can be attached to him.
