Samantha Brick On The AA Gill Spat: Mary Beard IS Too Ugly For TV (PICTURES)

Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 2/05/2012 09:29 Updated: 2/05/2012 11:17

She’s been described as deluded, arrogant and conceited, and yet Samantha Brick has waded back into the spotlight – this time in support of AA Gill’s assertion that academic Mary Beard is too ugly for TV.

The spat erupted last week after Gill insulted Meet The Romans presenter Mary Beard, branding her “too ugly for television”.

An outspoken restaurant reviewer and critic, Gill suggested Beard, who is a Cambridge University classics professor, apply for the Channel 4 programme The Undateables, which features people with facial deformities and disabilities in their quest to find love.

Samantha Brick has thrown in her two pence over the Mary Beard and AA Gill spat

Gills's Wikipedia page was subsequently hacked, with the entry labelling him as "a pitiable little sexist". It added that his current employers at the Sunday Times were thinking of hiring "a twelve-year old playground bully who would produce the same work for pocket money and half a pack of Marlboro Lights".

It went on to mock the controversial critic, saying "his essays are known for their humour [citation needed] and lack of relevant content, and are characterised by shallow and insecure sniping at people whose success he finds intimidating."

Not one to miss an opportunity, Brick has thrown in her two pence, firing off a missive via The Daily Mail: “While there is no denying that Ms Beard is a supremely intelligent and fiercely ambitious woman, there is absolutely no chance of her becoming a successful broadcaster in prime-time slots on flagship TV channels. The plain truth is that Ms Beard is too ugly for TV.”

The 41-year-old blonde, who claims to have received near constant hostility from women jealous of her good looks, continued, suggesting Professor Beard’s producer “sit her down and discuss a makeover”.

She adds: “The greatest tragedy isn’t Ms Beard’s wild hair, ungainly posture or make-up free face: it’s the fact that the BBC didn’t offer her guidance on her appearance in the first place.”

For her part, Professor Beard responded to Gill, again via The Daily Mail, criticising him for his "misogynist" remarks, accusing the critic of being "sexist" and unable to cope with clever women.

She added: "Maybe it's precisely because he did not go to university that he never quite learned the rigour of intellectual argument and he thinks that he can pass off insults as wit."

This morning the academic responded to the latest furore by telling The Huffington Post UK: "Just to say I wont be losing much sleep about S Brick.. and just hope that all this silly stuff doesn't detract from the programmes. It's the ROMANS who are the star of this show, not M BEARD!!"

She echoed her sentiments via Twitter:

Sorry. Teaching students all day. Not going to lose sleep over this. Dont want silly fuss to obscure the real stars: ROMANS.

Brick burst into the media spotlight after revealing that even when dressed down in a "demure, albeit pretty, top" she attracts the ire of fellow women and "snarky comments".

She recounted the time the pilot of her plane sent her a bottle of champagne in admiration for her beauty, how barmen frequently wave away her money when she tries to pay for drinks and the occasion a stranger in the street randomly presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

She wrote: "Whenever I’ve asked what I’ve done to deserve such treatment, the donors of these gifts have always said the same thing: my pleasing appearance and pretty smile made their day."

Brick’s claims her life has been blighted by her beauty saw her make an appearance on ITV’s This Morning, where she fanned the flames further, stating: "Women are not nice to each other. They always stab each other in the back. In my experience anyway."

She has since revealed the reason she has such terrific confidence in herself is the unswerving love of her father, confessing: “Unashamedly, I am a daddy’s girl, utterly confident in my father’s love.“

Wonder what she thinks of her husband's porn star moustache?

Brick and Gill both seem to prefer style over content. When I watch a programme I watch it for the content not for some vacuuous plastic presenter (both of these fall into that catagory). Never read Gill or watched Beard never will

Hey Brink woman by looking at your pixs. you are like a chubby little piglet.

Mary Beard has a brain! The Brick woman is plain and Gill is just too far up himself!

I am a huge fan of Mary Beard and look forward to her programme every week. I simply do not understand AA Gill's fixation on her looks. Frankly there is nothing wrong with her looks. She is perfectly pleasant looking and even if she wasn't, so what. I watch her brillant show for the content which is fascinating. What he said in his article was simply cruel and unnecessary. His tactics of absuing someone entirly on their looks has just backfired and made him look like a childish bully. He comes across as cocky, arrogant and frankly unpleasant.

Mary Beard has far more about her little finger than the likes of Samantha Brick. Samantha Bricks comments are extremely rude and offensive and totally out of order.
I'm surprised that you even publish them...makes you as bad as her in my opinion.

Ms. Brick is as thick as a brick.

It would appear that Mr. Gills questionable "manhood" has been somehow threatened by the intellectual strength of a strong woman. It is quite possible that Mr. Gill is envious of Ms. Beards confidence in her obvious femininity, grace, intellectual prowess and affinity to humility without self deprecation, that is truly the cause of his ire. What a pity, but the shame is all his. If he wasn't so busy trying so terribly hard at reliving his overly delusional adolescent fantasies at what it is to be a REAL man, he might just well have become one.

As for Ms. Brick....Well the poor "daddy's girl" still has A LOT of growing up to do before she spiritually and intellectually enters into REAL womanhood. Ms. Brick presents herself as a female of the human race that suffers from excitability brought on by bouts of delusions of narcissistic grandeur, which are invariably made evident through incoherent verbal ticks, that somehow cause her to envision herself as a female of astounding beauty. TRUE women of greater beauty (inside and out) can easily be found all over the world working in various shelters and soup kitchens and hospices, tending to those whom they esteem GREATER than themselves.

Maybe one day Mr. Gills and Ms. Bricks will graduate from the "kindergarten of their minds" and press on to some form of higher education....and maturity.

We can only hope...

Ms Brick for brains should not really be talking. Her so called confidence is more an inferiority complex expressed by her need to tell everyone she is "beautiful".

I watched Ms. Beard's show while I was in London - IT WAS AMAZING!

Her enthusiasm and knowledge of the "ROMANS" during their most dominant and productive centuries - was absolutely thrilling to watch and to hear!

Because of her intelligence and character, Ms. Mary Beard is "beautiful"...

How ridiculous! I cannot believe that a historian like Mary Beard who has presented an interesting programme about the Romans, which I very much enjoyed watching, is being castigated for how she looks by two idiots! Too ugly for TV? What kind of TV? What is a historian supposed to look like? Why should she look any different for her programme than she does in everyday life? I would much rather watch and listen to her than to some idiot who is purely reading an autocue and knows nothing but looks "good". If you don't like her, don't watch the programme, and don't make personal comments. It's rude!

If we have to discuss this in terms of "looks" -- I think Professor Beard has exactly the right "look" for this type of programme... the slightly dishevelled, sparkly-eyed, warm-hearted academic absolutely brimming with enthusiasm for the subject matter and bringing history alive in a very approachable way. Perfect. Just perfect.
I see no "ugly" there at all... except in the juvenile rantings of Ms Brick.

I don't want to listen to some tart tell me how gorgeous she thinks she is, I don't want to hear what some pompous tw*t had for dinner but I do want to listen to and watch an intelligent lady's attempt to educate me with a very interesting programme about the Romans.

Who has a go at David Attenborough for his fusty clothes, or Patrick Moore for his wild hair? Nobody - these men are considered idiosyncratic national treasures.

This is sexism, pure and simple. This Brick character is simply being controversial to make a name for herself. How very shallow and selfish!

I absolutely love my daughter and think she's beautiful, but I'm hoping that doesn't have the same effect on my daughter that S. Brick's father's affection had on his daughter. Love yourself, yes. But delusion is rarely attractive.
