Andrew Lansley Heckled By Nurses Over NHS Reforms

Lansley
Lansley's unpopular NHS reforms have provoked widespread protest both within the NHS and in public

Nurses heckled and laughed at Health Secretary Andrew Lansley on Monday after he claimed clinical staffing levels in the NHS had increased.

The Health Secretary was laughed at by members of the audience at the RCN annual conference in Harrogate after saying nurses should tell superiors if staffing levels were not safe.

Mr Lansley was speaking after a Royal College of Nursing (RCN) study warned more than 60,000 frontline jobs in the NHS, including those of nurses, were at risk because of spending cuts, with almost half already gone.

The RCN said 61,000 posts were at risk of being slashed across the health service, including nursing and other jobs, with 26,000 already lost in the two years to April.

The loss of so many jobs showed the "weakness" of Government pledges to protect the front line, according to the RCN.

But Mr Lansley insisted it is managers and administrators who have lost their jobs rather than clinical staff.

Some in the crowd shouted "liar" after the Health Secretary claimed clinical staffing levels had increased on his watch.

He said: "The number of staff in the NHS has gone down but actually the number of clinical staff has gone up.

"The number of managers and administrators has gone down. We do need to sustain that progress to get resources to the front line to ensure that they are owned and used by clinicians.

"Clinical leadership is at the heart of the process of reform across the NHS."

Monday's conference was not the first time Lansley has been confronted by the public over his controversial Health and Social Care bill reforming parts of the NHS.

June Hautot, protesting outside Number 10 in February, called Lansley a "gutless liar" after a confrontation with the Tory MP caught by television cameras.

In March, a doctor at Hampstead's Royal Free Hospital followed Lansley down a hall, shouting after him: "Your bill is rubbish and you know it."

Lansley was given the figures and information by the hospital Managers and administrators. Surely he must have smelled a rat? Nurses are scarcer than hens teeth at our local (PFI debt loaded) health trust. Managers and administrators? Everywhere you look! Take a visit to any hospital canteen and look at the proportion of uniformed nurses and staff versus shirt and skirt/trousers. There are 5 levels of management at our local Hospital, 5!
Then again... would managers and administrators really put themselves out of their cushy jobs when there are low ranking, non-management plebs wearing nurse uniforms, they could get rid of first?

The man is an idiot but at least he's consistantly so even if his information as to what is going on in the NHS is conflicting. If he wasn't so dangerous in "changing the NHS for the sake of change" he shouldn't be let out alone without his carerer

Lets cut to the chase , most nurses are doing anything they can BUT serve their clients , typical public sector workers SHIRKING and not WORKING , rather play solitaire at the station than give their patients water . There are the exceptions though , some of them do care .

If you had any idea the work environment we (yes, I am a nurse) have to go through on a daily basis you might have a different attitude toward nursing. Just because we do not have enough support staff to heed you hand and foot doesn't mean we aren't running around crazy to make sure all of our patients are safe.

The nurse that wasn't "giving patients water" was probably calling a rapid response on a patient who, if working cardiac, suddenly went into sustained v-tach and condition was deteriorating or, if working neuro, had a confused patient fall out of bed because their hospital didn't supply them with enough bed alarms or, if working surgical, had a patient that was developing post op complications because she/he became so overloaded with admissions from short staffing that they didn't have time to check vitals every fifteen minutes for the first hour.

But by all means, if you're well enough to be drink water, maybe you should get it yourself.

A poor workman blames his tools! No wonder the NHS reputation has gone downhill with nurses attitude problems! Probably one of those that put up the self made A4 laminated posters!

Nurses heckled and laughed - but your not allowed to do vice versa, by making a valid comment! lol.

I'm surprised a nurse never got him to drop his trousers, then got a scapel and cut his brains off.

I wonder what odds the bookies would give you on a politician telling the truth for once mmmm prob got more chance of landing the lottery jackpot on a triple roll over.Same old lies and twisted words spewing from the mouths of the politicians.Little wonder many go on to write fiction novels.

Lansley tells so many porkies that even he doesn't know what's the truth any more - he really is a sad excuse for a Politician!

There are too many self-interested parties who want to keep the status quo for any positive changes to be made. Labour hired a multi millionaire businessman to make the NHS more efficient, but he gave up in disgust and got on with his life.
09:07 PM on 05/14/2012
LOL.....
11:32 AM on 05/15/2012
Who are these self interested parties and who was this businessman?

perhaps it is people who have had their wages frozen, their pension contributions increased and have been told to work until they are 67? I think that anyone would have a self interest in that case.

The trouble is that there are too many people who are jealous of people who do a worthwhile job in the interest of the general public.

There are no nurses or managers in the NHS who are millionaires, but plenty in the privatised companies that want to leech the NHS.

How about having a go at these leeches and leave honest, working people alone.
11:56 AM on 05/15/2012
Yawn! Jealous? Public sector can't accept criticism / or competition.
Wages frozen, working longer etc. etc. doesn't just apply to public sector workers!
These leeches & care have proved their worth when the NHS has got things wrong
with people care! Anyone can do a worthwhile job - not everyone necessarily does the job well.

The Labour Party hired Phillip Green to modernise the NHS, but the consultants did not want to change their ways and work more efficiently.

Take Lansley seriously you must be joking. The Health Minister took his life in his hands fronting all those nurses. Just imagine Lansley became ill in conference, there would be one mad rush for the nearest exit and Lansley would be left alone to treat himself. Next stop a BUPA hospital no NHS hospital would accept the crazy man.

I would of let the Bar steward writhe in bloody agony like the misery he's inflicting on ordinary people who want a decent health service'..not a US'Style rationing rot while you wait system...Back to the bad ole' 80's when people are waiting for hours on trolleys in corridors. While beds are cut'Nurses sacked'Drugs rationed'..Hospitals eventually forced to go private because they're set up to fail....B*****s Lansley' you loathesome worm.

Mr Agent unable to disagree with your comments. Prior the the election of Labour in my area of the country we had nothing better than Work Houses acting as hospitals. Our main hospital was built by the American Forces during the 2nd WW. NHS safe in our hands " I don't think so "

Our population naturally rises year after year. But on top of this; the "open door" immigration policy labour gave us (that still continues),and tens of thousands who simply pop over to utilise our "free" NHS; ALL of which impacts upon our aged NHS and its ability to look after the people of THIS country. And time and time again, it is the taxpaying, honest and hardworking general public that seems to get the rough end of the stick.

Labour sandwiched as many middle managers as it could get away with into the NHS(with little care of cost), so it needs sorted; BUT, anyone who doubts that it will be, and is, frontline staff that are bearing the brunt of this attack is stupid. Stupid in the same way in that you dont believe losing 16,000 police staff will not increase crime, create tension and cause more officers to leave the service due to stress!!!

With Tens of thousands of nurses and trained doctors being used as "cover" through agencies and the same again considering leaving the NHS, we are paying twice over for staff who could be full time and ADDING benefit to our society; but of course, you falesly "save" money by not having them on the hospitals books dont you?

Stupidity after stupidity, MP after MP and party after party have proven, that to the mass of this nation, NO party has proven to care about those who actually run, maintain and keep this country going.

Lansley doesn't care, is ploughing ahead with devastating privatisation and won't listen to reason, so why even turn up for these meetings? Is he so arrogant to believe if he repeats his lies often enough even NHS professionals will swallow them, alá Goebels?
Oh, he's a Tory so of course he does.
07:12 PM on 05/14/2012
why does this excuse for a minister try and pull the wool over front line staff, he's just like one of the 1st world war generals who were so far away from the men at the front they could hear big ben chime.

Because Tory arrogance leads them to think they're our 'betters' and that we should just shut up and live under their 'benign' rule like good little serfs.

It must have been like going into the dragons den, and hey he came out totally beaten up, as he should, because he does not have a compelling idea, plan, or the finance. he tells blatant lies, does not comprehend the real life and is in the pockets of the independent medical companies.
