John Finnie and Jean Urquhart Quit SNP Over Party's Support For Nato

Two MSPs Quit SNP Over Nato Support

Two MSPs have quit the SNP in opposition to the party's new support for Nato, it has been confirmed.

John Finnie and Jean Urquhart were among eight MSPs who led a grassroots revolt against the party leadership's plan to take an independent Scotland into the nuclear armed military alliance.

The U-turn split the party almost down the middle when it was voted on at the SNP conference in Perth last week.

Defence spokesman Angus Robertson was booed by some members of the party as he made his final plea to reverse its 30 years of opposition to Nato.

In a tense vote, delegates voted 394 to 365 to reject an amendment, which was signed by Mr Finnie and Ms Urquhart, which would have rejected full Nato membership.

SNP leader Alex Salmond said: "I'm saddened that Jean and John have decided to resign from the party.

"They have been excellent servants to the SNP, and I'm grateful to them for their tireless efforts."

Mr Finnie now describes himself on social networking site Twitter as "Independent MSP for Highlands and Islands", appending the hashtag #notoNATO.

Ms Urquhart has changed her Twitter name from @JeanUrquhartSNP to @JeanUrquhartMSP.

Speaking on Moray Firth Radio, Ms Urquhart said: "I am totally committed to an independent Scotland, and will campaign vigorously through the Yes campaign, but I believe in an independent Scotland not dependent on nuclear weapons."

Mr Finnie said: "I had never considered standing down but the reality is that the views that I advocated during the election have changed, the voice of the party, the policy that produced a majority government for us.

"I haven't changed my position and my commitment on disarmament, and (because of) the relationship that Nato has to the potential to achieve that I will be sitting as an independent."
