The release of Abu Qatada from Long Lartin prison on Tuesday has promoted outcries of injustice, anger and disbelief on the social networking site Twitter.

Many on Twitter was confused as to why Qatada, who will not be deported to Jordan over fears for his safety in the country, could not be sent to his home country.

Business entrepreneur and Labour peer Lord Sugar tweeted:

Lord Sugar
Abu Qatada gets released tomorrow. Can anyone tell me why we can't just stick him on a plane to Jordan. What would happen if we did it ?

Elsewhere, the ritual mashing of news stories has resulted in many making the same joke, questioning whether Qatada will now replace the departed George Entwistle as director general of the BBC, with Entwistle being shuffled on a plane to Jordan.
