She might have mixed things up at the Grammys earlier this month in a embroidered red and pink floral dress, but (to coin another Brit singer) Adele went back to black for this year's Oscars.

The star - who is favourite to win the Best Original Song Oscar for 'Skyfall' - looked stunning in a floor-length, embellished black Jenny Packham gown.

Adele is also performing the James Bond theme during the show. Sources who were lucky enough to watch her rehearse said she was 'indescribably mind-blowing'.

Another onlooker told the Mail: "It was Adele, singing live and knocking it out of the park. Everyone stopped to listen. The carpenters and lighting guys started applauding. It’s impossible to impress those guys but they were bowled over and showed their respect.

"It sounded out of this world unaccompanied and later some of us heard her sing with the full works, the full orchestra and it was one of those rare goose bump moments that you never forget".
